I was not expecting the great mileage I am getting when I bought my 99 CLK430 two weeks ago.
On the trip home from KY to MD I got a little over 28 MPG on 89 octane. I do not use the recommended 92 octane because as an ex-research engineer for Sunoco in their fuel development lab I know it's a waste of money for the type of driving I do.
I have been getting 26.8 to 27.2 MPG on 89 octane and since I installed new K&N air filters my milage has been right at 28 mpg. I do most highly driving and I am light on the gas from a dead stop.
what kind of mileage are the rest of you all getting?
Consider yourself lucky. I pretty much never get over 20 mpg, and that's even if 2/3 of my driving is highway. If I just do in town driving (and I can have a heavy foot from time to time) I only get maybe 15 or so mpg. Maybe I need to have something checked out????
Interesting....adding on I went and checked what the numbers are supposed to be. Maybe I do want to check something out.

Interesting. My research indicates that cars that require higher-octane fuel have their air/fuel/spark ratio optimally set for that higher-octane fuel, relative to the atmospheric pressure/altitude. So, if a lower octane (less refined) fuel is used, cars that require higher octane (like ours) will throw more fuel/air into the cylinders to compensate for the lower octane to maintain performance, thus giving you worse gas mileage.
Not trying to argue with a ex-research engineer :) , but does that sound right?
As a side note... I have had the CEL on for the past 5 months.. havend found the time to change the Air mass sensor [:I] well, with gass pricess scraping 3 bucks / gallon i decides to go with 89 octane. The CEL went away after the standard 3 starts... weird?? any input?

Our CEL's are linked to Mercedes-Benz Corporation's mainframe via hidden satelite linkage. When their stock goes down, they turn on all CEL's to bring in revenue for parts. When their stock goes down, they turn them off. It has to be the only explanation.

you are correct in your assumptions, however to assume how Mercedes may have advance programmed is anyone's guess.
an interesting tidbit..
my wife has a brand new Lexus RX330 - they also recommend 92 octane, but admit to being able to run on 89 octane also.
I have a clk 55 in the UK & our lowest octane here is 95, yet mb recommend for my car 97. My question is how come in the states you guys can get away with 89?! or 92 for that matter?
Makes me think jjj has a pretty valid point. Maybe the fuel ratings and recommendations are just a bunch of crap.
On another note...if I ever get out to Maryland (I'll be in NC in a couple weeks but unfortunately for me not close enough), you HAVE to take me out on your boat jjj!!!!!!!!! [:0]

*chuckle* I like that, only it doesn't hold water. DCX has been hitting 52-week highs lately...
