I was thinking about my transmission fluid again since the dealership was trying to pull one over on me before. I remember ThrillKill saying something about finding a Russian mechanic. Well out of the blue I remembered we do have a foreign mechanic here who works on imports. He quoted me about $270 which is way better than what the dealership quoted.
Anyway, my question is this: When you guys have had the fluid changed, they just changed the fluid, filter and gasket but left the sealed part of the tranny alone, right? Just making sure before I schedule my appointment.
They need to drain the converter as well (he should know how to do that), but the tranny has to be filled through the tamper proof plug. This is a dealer item, but you can walk in and buy one and they're only a few bucks.
Just had mine done at about 53k. I acquired 15 qts. of M-B trans. fluid and thats what it took to "flush" the system. There's no need to open the tran. thus no gaskets or filters are required so long as your mechanic has the proper flushing equipment. There is no tamper proof plug-you simply remove the plug on the top of the trans. case when your ready to fill the trans. It takes 9.5 qts. but the flushing machine will get it real close, then you just manually top it off. You do need a dip stick though to get an accurate measure of the fluid level and they're available at many accessory shops-about $45.00. The cost of $270 is about what it cost me. Hope this helps-it sure beats the dealer cost and took only about 35 minutes. Roger B.
