Damn! Only 25K miles on our '08 C 350, and the electronic ignition lock died. Along with a new battery (because the car is just over 5-years old), I'm looking at a THOUSAND DOLLAR bill tomorrow. This should not happen!
One bright note, I could have paid $2800 for a two-year extended policy, so I'm still $1800 ahead. But a garaged, properly driven, loved C 350 shouldn't have parts like that fail. Is this a fluke, or just the beginning of a string of failures?
I still love the car, but I'm a bit bummed out right now.
I bought my CPO when it was 5 years old and had 53,000 miles so I was only able to pay to extend it to 7 years/100,000 miles so 1 additional year. In my case that investment more than paid for itself. Of course, the rules have changed and we can buy up to 135,000 miles but I'm unsure about the years. In my humble opinion, you should have extended your CPO for as long as MBUSA allows. At least, that is my plan for the next car.
In the case of most Mercedes models, extended the CPO (Mercedes-backed) warranty makes sense.
In the case of the current gen C-class, it's usually not necessary. For example my 08 C300 is 5 years old with over 90K miles and no repairs have been needed since the new car warranty expired (other than wear items like brake pads and a couple of bulbs).
i know it's a bit of a long shot, but you may want to ask the service manager if he or she can extend to you a "goodwill repair." They might be willing to at least meet you half way, say pay for the parts and you pay for labor. Your car has such low mileage and is obviously well cared for, and with it being so close to the warranty expiration they may work with you. Certainly doesn't hurt to ask in this case!
Agreed, worth a try, especially if you have been a regular customer at the dealership. I've had good success with Porsche in situations like this, not so much with Mercedes in my experiences.
