C300 Reliability

Hey guys,

My girlfriend is currently shopping around for a car and she's decided between the 2008-2009 C300 4Matic Mercedes or 2007-2008 328xi coupe. I'm a BMW guy myself so I understand those cars and the prices to fix everything. I'm curious about the mercedes though. Are they pretty reliable cars? The car would most likely have 30k on it. Should an extended warranty be purchased? If so, what's the best company to get it through.

Thanks,
Mike

I have an 08 c300 and it never gave me any problems. Only down fall for MBZ is that they will charge an arm and your first born for service done but you can do most of the service yourself.

I used to be a BMW guy myself. I owned an e46 M3, 335i coupe, E39 530i, E38 740iL, an X3 over the last 10 years so I know where you are coming from. Personally in my relatively short experience with MB, I find the reliability about the same maybe MB being a bit better thus far. However, the build quality on my 08 C350 seems to be a little better than some of my more recent BMW's. But I have only been an MB owner for about 8 months now so my opinion is certainly not as valid as many otheres on this forum. So far, after approx. 8,000 miles not one single issue.

I think both brands and cars are overall well made and nice to drive. The 328 has a little more road feel and sharper turn in,especially if sport pack equipped and is probably a better overall performer. That being said, I also think the C300 is more comfortable, a smoother ride especially if a Luxury model and better looking. I also prefer MB's MM package to BMW's i drive. Good luck!

Here is some data.........

JDPower.com | C-Class

JDPower.com | 3 Series

In addition, here is where they are now for new cars currently produced.

Ratings | J.D. Power

The newer the used car you buy, the more likely the MB C Class quality will be higher.

The C300 is reliable, especially for a German car and certainly for a Mercedes of the last decade. I have over 50K miles on my 2008, repairs have been a couple of light bulbs, a cracked fog light lens and rear brake pad replacement in last year. Otherwise routine maintenance at 13K intervals.

both are nice

I own a 2010 C350 (me) and a 2011 328xi (wife). Both are great cars but also quite different.

C350

Pros: comfort, handling, easy to read guages, steering is very crisp.

Cons: bluetooth phone system is outdated, must pay for maintenance first 50k miles.

328xi

Pros: great technology package. (Far better than MB), firm ride, free scheduled maintenance for first 50k miles, larger cabin feel.

Cons: heavy steering for all wheel drive, hard to read instrument guages.

We love both cars so hard to say which is better. No issues with either car so far. The C350 drives and feels more like a sports car but the BMW feels like a bigger presence on the road. In both you equally forget how fast you are going because they ride so well. The MB actually rides even better above 80 mph so you will find yourself wanting to go faster!

I would recommend an extended road test in each car to see which one is best for her.

I think you got that backwards in terms of handling. 328xi should have much better handling than a C350. I drive a C350 with 18" amg's and even though it rides very firm, handling is not that good compared to bmw 3-series.
