is the extended warranty worth it??
I know this depends on a lot of factors i.e. how much you drive how long you plan on keeping the car but I was wondering in your opinion is the extra warranty that you can buy for around 2,500 I think worth it

Without the following, hard to reply.
Is it a Mercedes warranty? No deductible? How many years extension? How many total miles?

Not worth it to buy it up front. You can always opt to purchase it later and there's no cost difference from what the dealership told me. Also, if god forbid you total your car before the extended warranty part kicks in, you basically eat that cost.

very true about the total issue but it is only the same cost for the first year you own your car then goes up and yes it is a mb warranty it brings your warranty up to 5 years or 100,000miles
Actually, unless something has changed drastically, it's not true that you eat the warranty cost if the car is totaled. As long as you have made no claims on the extended warranty, and your car was still covered by the original 4/50 warranty, you can apply to have your premium refunded any time before the 4/50 warranty expires. They will deduct a modest service charge, but otherwise refund your premium.
When we traded our '02 C240 [at the 42 month mark], I applied for and received a full refund of our cost for the extended warranty, less [if I remember correctly] about $50. To show you how times have changed, we bought the full extension [to 7/100] for around $1800 in 2003. Mind you, they were asking something like $2400 at the time at most dealers, but I just sent out few e-mails and my selling dealer matched the lowest bid I got. I got a check for over $1750 to close it out after the trade.
Which brings up another thing - any authorized dealer can sell you the MBUSA extended warranty, and it carries an MSRP [highly inflated] and a dealer cost just like everything else. Don't pay MSRP- shop around.
If you insure your car through GEICO within the first year or first 15,000 miles, you can add on "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance" This insurance costs me like $50 or $60 every 6 months and they cover all non wear and tear parts of your car for a $250 deductible for 7 yrs/ 100,000.
It is the main reason I chose GEICO over others, even though GEICO was a bit more expensive. I imagine it will come in handy if the A/C, radio or electrical system gives me problems after my MB warranty is up. I fear the $3,000 A/C bill or the the the $1,200 sunroof is broken bill. In which case, I will only pay $250 and feel ok about it.
Just a thought, I think of it as an alternative to an extended warranty. Time will tell how well it really works or if I will need need it.
mechanical systems are pretty freekin reliable... its thoes fancy pants computers that end up crapping out on you... does the GEICO warrenty cover that.

Yup we all are, myfactory warranty just expired, MB dealership wants 3500* for 2 yrs/72k extended warranty i did not go for it, im debating if i should sell my car and get into something else. As far as reliabilty ive heard of some maintenance horror stories on other threads post warranty, i wish MB made cars like the old days>
The GEICO warranty covers all non wear and tear parts including those feeble computer systems or at least it should. Time will tell how good it is as I have yet to actually need to use it.
I am beginning to sound like an insurance salesman here. I wonder has anyone here has had a chance to actually the GEICO mechanical insurance or a similar plan?
