I love the new C-class, they look amazing. The AMG version is even more insane with 451 hp. Though if you want better gas mileage you can't go wrong with a C230 Kompressor. Honestly I think it's one of the best engines MB ever made. It's listed as 20-29 mpg between city and highway, though I once got 30 mpg on the highway with the A/C on. I was disappointed in the '07 6 cylinder C230; huge lack of power. But the previous ones get awesome mileage on the 4 cylinders and the kompressor packs a punch. I love my 2000 C230 Kompressor, though I am envious of anyone who has the new model
It's funny that some people in this thread have no idea how bad it is on the coasts and in big cities. Im in NYC and I'm paying 4.65/gallon in some places, so i spend about $70/week in gas.
not to mention that's now that school commute is over and I'm cutting down. Just thinking about these prices being there in the fall when I go back to driving close to 500 miles a week is unthinkable.
We need some kind of relief! NO WAY am i driving a hybrid.
if some people are averaging about 21-23 mpg, that's pretty damn good. a toyota corolla which has 4 cylinders and is a hell of a lot lighter gets about 28 mpg. given all of that, i think it's safe to say that the C-Class does get pretty good mileage as long as you are mindful of the way you drive.
plus the C-Class has all the great gizmo's and looks awesome!

Yep, $4.59 for Chevron premium here in San Jose today.
And now $4.79 as of 06/23/08.

Firstly, in suburban errand-running mode [mixed freeway and streets] we manage 20-21 mpg; in pure highway driving [long trips] it's 26-29 mpg. So the EPA numbers are reasonable, and give you fair warning.
Secondly, on a recent visit to SF, in PURE CITY driving, nothing but stop and go, the computer was indeed showing 15-16 mpg. I don't find that especially surprising or shocking. This is not a "city car".
Thirdly, it's not reasonable to use the term "Bluetec" and make generalizations about MB diesel fuel consumption. Everything depends on weight and gearing, but most importantly, displacement and cylinder count. The engine you should want for the US market is the newly announced 4 cyl turbodiesel - that would easily see 40 mpg on the highway, and well into the mid-to-high 20s in pure urban driving in a W204 body. The trick is to convince MBUSA to allow us to have this drivetrain:
Around here, diesel is currently running about 8-10% more than premium gasoline....EVERY MB diesel in the current engine lineup would beat EVERY gasoline engine available in the US W204 by at least 15-20% in fuel consumption, and with the 4 cyl, it would be more like 30%. Do the math; even at current diesel prices, diesel makes sense....if we could only get our hands on them.
No complaints here...I've avaeraged 21.5 for the first 6K miles with our C300 4Matic. I find in town I can get 20-21 mpg and have gotten up to 27 on the highway. As a matter of fact, this is the first new car I have ever owned that got better mpg than what the sticker stated.
Tonight I drove home from San Antonio to Austin
I set my cruise control on 70mph and then RESET the "Since Start" mpg screen. I've never understood why it doesn't wait 10 seconds before showing the first number and mine ALWAYS shows 21.7mpg... this is weird. I had an '01 CLK430 and when I would RESET the mpg screen it would deftaul to like 17.8mpg and THEN I had the whole dash replaced because of burned out spots and the NEW one would do something around 21.5mpg immediately after reset. Now I was a software developer for MOST of my professional career and that makes NO SENSE to me...
NOW onto my real point.
Cruise set at 70mph on I-35 heading North to Austin
Reset Since Start MPG Screen
17 miles later it's reading 31.0
I had a FULL TANK of 89 octane Exxon gas this morning and I now have 3/4 tank
I pull off the hwy and coast down the exit ramp to a gas station to get a drink cause i was really thirsty after softball practice.
When I stop in the parking lot it now reads 31.2mpg
I get in and CAREFULLY accelerate on the service road and then merge on highway
It never went BELOW 30.0mpg
I get back up to 70mph and reset cruise
I get off at my exit, a total of 57 miles and it now reads 31.4mpg
p.s. My trunk is full of golf clubs, shoes, golf balls, softball gear, umbrella etc...
SOOOO... I'm not sure what HEAVY FOOT habits you guys have but I'm THRILLED with my mileage and I'm using 89 octane!
In pure, cruise-controlled highway driving, I too have seen 30+ mpg. It's hard to make that over a full day's driving, though, because of topography and traffic.
On a recent trip returning home from California, we did 500 miles at 70-80 mph, with a gain and loss of over 4000 feet of altitude, with the AC on full blast, and the average for the trip was just short of 29 mpg.
What's remarkable is that this car beats our '02 C240 by 1-3 mpg in virtually all situations, and has 40% more power to boot. Sounds good to me.
So i've burned 4 tanks of 87 octane in my c350 now and on this most recent tank i experienced this MPG perforrmance.
65 total miles
6 miles of city with stop lights
59 miles of highway w/cruise set at 75mph
MPG was at 24.5 when I entered hwy
MPG was at 29.7 when I exited 59 miles later
I did hit my brakes a few times and some of the driving was between 65-70mph but at least 90% was at cruise on 75mph. The drive has some gradual hills and descents but is pretty flat overall.
