I love my new C Class and noticed the transmission has a C and S function has anyone noticed a difference? When to use which? My dealer stated leave it in Comfort mode. Any ideas? Thanks
C stands for comfort mode, S stands for sports. It is a transmission configuration. Basically if you are in C mode, the transmission will start from the 2nd gear instead of first, and it will change gear at lower rpm. Whereas the S mode, you start from the 1st gear and it will rev up a little bit more before it changes gear.
There's not really a "better". I prefer to use "C" as it makes the car take off more gently; used in "S", the 1st gear take-off is quicker but almost annoyingly so in traffic, plus you have a pretty quick gear change to 2nd. Try both for a while & decide which you prefer. I think it all got started as taking off in 2nd is ideal for slippery winter road condtions.

I've changing from C to S mode all the time, even changing at alternating stop lights to compare them.... I think the difference is considerable, especially out of the hole and during spirited acceleration the S mode clearly delivers better performance. As already stated, the C mode starts from the 2nd gear and shifts earlier, delivering best fuel economy and smooth shifting. The difference in starting from 1st gear and from 2nd can not be under-estimated, and the later shifts allow the car to maximize the powerband through all gears, sucking up more gas. I also agree that during poor weather and road conditions, the C mode is probably a lot safer.
