I've ordered an '08 C300 4Matic which will arrive in November and I am now shopping for winter tires and rims. TireRack says you need to install a pressure sensor in each rim - cost $284 - to sync with the car's tire pressure monitoring system. (I could move the sensors from the summer rims but it defeats the purpose of having winter tires mounted on their own rims).
If I don't install the monitors, does anyone know if the monitoring system in the car can be disabled or will I be looking at a warning light all winter long?

AFAIK, you'll be seeing the annoying light all through Winter if you don't have the TPMS installed.
Also, I believe Audi, BMW & M-B use TPM sensors made by Beru AG (German company). it works off 433MHz, and the embedded battery lasts for ~8 years. So $284 over 8 years isn't too bad... get 'em!
Just make sure the wheels you'll be getting can accommodate the sensors. Some wheels do not.
Canadian cars have normal rims with the "dumb" pressure monitoring system (same as B-Class) that uses the ABS sensors to detect a major change in tire diameter.
....so, good news, you can put regular rims on for winter....your dealer probably has a package.

That's great news, I prefer "dumb" wheels with no sensors (somehow I've survived 40 years of driving without them). The dealer gave me the build list and it lists Accessory Code 477 - Tire Puncture Warning - so I assumed that was the TPMS that TireRack says I need to purchase the sensors for.
