C220 or C320 CDI ?

Guys, I need to hear your views on these 2 engines. I'm in the UK, and so far am split between ordering the 220 or the 320 diesel. I have now driven both. I initially drove the 220cdi. It had ample power, however I could still hear that diesel clatter from the 4 pot, and I felt the power delivery was a bit uncivilised - or rather violent especially during kickdown. Also, low down the rev range, the pulling power was a bit weak. Anyway, I then drove the C320cdi with huge expectations, being a V6 with 510 Nm of torque from 1600 rpm etc. Started it and I was pleased that the V6 had much less of an audible diesel clatter. Pulled away, and I still had to work the throttle somewhat to get the desired pulling power. In my mind, it was definitely not noticeably better than the C220. Also I could not notice a huge improvement from having the 7G tronic gearbox compared to the 5 speed auto. Yes, it made the kickdowns less violent, but nothing exceptional. Overall, I came away thinking that, everything considered, it's probably not worth the extra cost to go for the C320 over the C220. That would be the sensible thing to do. However, there is still the lad in me, who's thinking, what the heck, just go for it. So, I don't know and I want to hear what you guys have thought from either ownership or test-drives of these 2 engines.

I'm just envious that you have a diesel, much less two to choose from!

I've had the 220CDi, 270CDi and 320CDi in the previous generation C Class, W203.

The most disappointing engine was with the 270CDi with its off beat 5 cylinder clatter.

The 220CDi represented great value for money, delivered great economy and reasonable performance.

The 320CDi was awesome. Great noise, power and still efficient.....on that basis I've ordered a W204 with the 320CDi engine and lots of toys!

C220i

Hi

I'm in the UK and just ordered the C220 CDI Sport as my company car. I had a test demo car for 3 days and found it to be fast enough for me though I agree it could do with a little more power when pulling away from the lights. As to the noise, well I've not heard the 320 CDI but the C220 CDI is way quiter than Audi A4 2l TDI that it will replace.

For value for money I think the C220 CDI wins.

So the spec I've ordered which has an anticipated delivery day of 31/10/08 ...

MERCEDES BENZ C220D 4D(NW) 08 2.2CDi SPORT AU :

512/390 COMAND Rd/SnglCD/DVD M+ 386
287 Split Fold Rear Seats
810 LOGIC 7 M+ 510/511 or 512
537 DAB Digital Radio Tuner M+510/11/512
220 Parktronic System
Metallic Body Paint
732 Birdseye Maple Wood Interior Trim

I have not tried either the C220CDi or the C320CDi so I am glad you liked the C320Ci. Mainly because I have also ordered one with all the toys I wanted. Expected delivery is 6th November to the dealer so will collect on the 8th November. Christmas is in November this year yipee!

Thanks for the feedback. I guess the conclusion is the heart is saying C320, whilst the head is saying C220, given it ticks all the boxes I'd want from a car and represents an excellent value for money. I have arranged a back-to-back test drives of both cars for next weekend. I'll make up my mind once and for all then.

Let us know. The 320 involves extensive wallet action and I am keen to know if, in use the expense is really justifiable.

Adam.

I ordered a C220 Sport a couple of weeks ago, thought long and hard about the C320 but with the additional fuel consumption and high Co2 band thought the C220 was a better option. I'm in the UK too and been quoted November / December for delivery due to supply issues! Not good! Managed to save £2,400 off list though!
