How to identify the spring's shim number?

I been hearing people mentioning shims numbers as:
DOT1-DOT5. Anyone know how i can identify which ones that I have, besides taking the wheels and springs off?
Also, what the the thickness of these shim:
DOT1= MM
DOT2= MM
DOT3= MM
DOT4= MM
DOT5= MM

LASTLY: Anyone here lowered thier car using H&R sport spring, using 17' 225/45 profile tire? I am a bit hesitant to install the H&R because it might lower too much...the O.E. sport from H&R seem to be perfect, but too bad they dont make them for MBZ.
The distance from the ground to the center of the fender wheel arc is:
Front: 27 1/4'
Rear: 25 3/8'
With 225/45/17

What are your measurements lowered with H&Rs (with the same wheel/tire size).

Pictures are welcome...

Thanks.
Re: How to identify the spring's shim number?

210 321 0184 5mm = 1 dot
210 321 0284 9mm = 2 dots
210 321 0384 13mm = 3 dots
210 321 0484 17mm = 4 dots
210 321 0585 21mm = 5 dots

There's no way to indentify without taking them off since it sits on top of the spring.

Once off, the number of dots specifies what it is.
