Thanks for your help ahead of time......
My C 240s belt tensioner broke and steam came out of the hood
I am not sure what lights came on or how long it was driven like this, I can't imagine it was for long.
My wife was at the wheel so I am not sure what bells and whistles / warning lights came on.
What I have been able to determine is that steam did come out of the hood and the coolant reservoir is now close to empty.
The dipstick doesnt seem to have traces of coolant but daylight will help me check for sure.
What are the odds it overheated and i'll need a valvejob?
it depends on how long it was overheated. it may be fine if it was only a very short time. if it was in the red for an extended period you may issues. you really won't know until you try to run it (or if you get a compression/leakdown test).
If the car was driven for a long time with the engine overheating, than you might be looking at a blown head gaket, or worst. The least I would do at this stage is replace the oil and check it for other fluids (color of oil, smell, etc.). Good luck.
I'll bet the "steam" was more burning rubber than coolant. This happened to our C240 (my granddaughter's car) as she was leaving my office on day. I was behind her and say the smoke billowing out from behind so I called her and told her to pull over. My advice is to replace the tensioning pulley, refill the radiator and reservoir, and see what you have.
Thanks all for the replies.... I swapped out the tensioner and the pulley
as well as the idler pulley.
So far so good there were no obvious leaks...
I refilled the coolant reservoir and right away i heard a leak ..and VoilA..the radiator is busted ..major leak out of the left side of the radiator... just odd that both these things failed simoltaneusly!
btw....where is the dam oil dipstick on these things!? found the trns dipstick ..it's sealed in the back but no oil dipstick!
The c240 has both the engine oil and tranny tube in the back next to each othe behind the air box, You can use the same dipstick to measure both if you clean it well enough to prevent contamination. or buy separate sticks.
In addition to the belt tensioner I replaced the radiator .. And added coolant and Voila...had it running again in the 2 hours that it took me to replace the radiator.....and there we go...Its a done deal...
Thanks again everyone!
