Hi, I have a 2002 C230. Recently I got an error message saying "undervoltage consumer defective". My battery registers a voltage of 12.4 so it seems safe to say the issue is either the voltage regulator or the alternator. A charging system test was done and the results are: No load (13.28V), loaded (11.71V). My question is, how can I tell if it is the alternator that is bad or if the voltage regulator has gone bad? Do I have to remove the alternator to do the test?
There are many places that remanufacture/refurbish alternators for much less cost than a new alternator. I have done this on my ML inthe past, I was happy with that.
My suggestions is that you look up [on yellow pages] local stores for Alternator remanufacturer.
I just recently replaced my alternator in my 2004 c230. Bought the part online for around $150, the Voltage Regulator comes with the alternator. I paid for 2 hours of labor ($180)... All in all I got out for around $330.. I was quoted $700 for the shop buying the part and doing the install, so buying it myself I saved a ton.
