2002 C240 Change Transmission Fluid?

Hi All,

I'm really confused about whether I should change my auto transmission fluid. I just got this car and it runs great; from what I can tell, it has never had transmissiion service. I just passed 100,000 miles and I am preparing to have maint done for an oil change and the 100,000 mile maint. of changing the spark plugs. I have read/heard conflicting stories about the transmission fluid; some say, at 100,000 miles and it never being changed, it's better NOT to change the fluid and in fact it could cause damage. Others say change it. I'ld love to hear opinions from you guys.

thanks!

There is some validity to the arguments against changing fluid that's been in the transmission a long time, but I'd say they do not apply to MBZ's. First of all, MBZ uses full synthetic fluid which does not break down like conventional oils. Second, the fluid change will replace less than half of the total capacity. Finally, you will be changing the filter and that is always a good thing. If it were my car, I'd do it.

If you don't change the tranny fluid, you might be OK for another 30 to 40K miles before "passing the point of no return". If you do change it right now, there is a slight chance that you will run into problems, such as a plugged high pressure solenoid, but it's fixable RIGHT NOW. If you wait, than it will be a new tranny in your basket -- around $5K for a rebuilt/installed.

I would not wait much longer, and have it serviced every 30K from now on. More often if you are in a hot climate.

Thanks for the feedback; I was talking to someone today and they said a change would be ok, but not flush of the fluid. Thanks again for the insight

"...change it but don't flush it..." olde wifes tales. That fluid could have used a change at 50,000, synthetic or not. Change it yourself ( ALSO EMPTY TORQUE CONVERTER AND REPLACE FILTER....easy but messy) or spend the money and have it flushed....but...DO IT NOW!!!...It's overdue. Mercedes idea of "lifetime" fluid is the lifetime of the warranty. After that they don't give'a...so do it.

definitely DO change your original fluid and filter. Use ONLY the OEM Mercedes (febi bilstein) fluid. Approx 4.5 Liters for just pan. after that you can leave it alone for the next 40K miles (official interval is 39K from MBZ)

For your information I did my tranmisssion fluid change and new filter and gasket change on my 2005 C230 Kompressor last week. The car is only 77,000 miles I notice the fluid is dirty and when I took the filter off I can see a dark black fuid comes out. Also when I clean the pan in the bottom is heavy dard fluid.

I am not the expert but I do not beleive what I see how dirty the fluid and I can confirm no fluid is life time. I will replace every 30,000 miles from now on.
I think the job is not bad and the cost around $80 ( 4 litters and afilter and a gasket).

The only I can not find the drain for the converter so I did not do the convertier.

Thanks all, for the advice. I did end up changing it last Saturday and it seems fine. IF there was a problem, would it appear immediately? It seems to be running fine. I bought Mercdes parts and had a mercedes mechanic do it for me

Problems would likely take a while to surface, but I'd bet yours is going to be just fine.
