I have a White 2005 C230 Kompressor which I have had for about about 2 years, and I love the car. However when I bought it the dealer only gave me 1 smartkey.
I don't know if it was my heavy fingers or thin plastic, but about 6 months ago the key button cracked eventually opening up a small hole in the plastic of the unlock portion of the key. I put some electrical tape around it and searched for a replacement key until I found out how expensive it was to replace.
Then about 6 weeks ago I started having problems with the car not starting when I put the smartkey in the ignition. The ignition would not turn. At first in was 1 in every 20 trys, then 1 in every 10 trys. I tried cleaning the exterior of the key but that didn't help. In the past few weeks the problem got worse, down to 1 in every 3 trys. I couldn't live with it any longer.
I went to my local non dealer MB mechanic thinking he would know someone who did the ignition & key replacement at a discounted price, or maybe he could do it. The price quoted was five to seven hundred dollars, and he would still have to go through the dealership. Additionally the car would be out of service for 2 days.
Thinking this ignition would not wear out at 50,000 miles, and knowing it was gonna cost me a bundle real soon I tried one last thing. I took the tape off the key and through the cracked hole I sprayed electrical contact cleaner inside, the kind used for electronics. The result, the smartkey works every time! Apparently dust or lint had got inside, maybe some on the board. Thought i'd pass this along.
At any rate I have seen a few MB owners here have purchased replacement keys from non dealers. Can anybody direct me?
Thanks in advance!
