Cant open hood on 2007 C230

My original post in the car care section was about storing the car for winter, but now I have anothe problem.

The hood latch (pops out of the front grill) broke and came off from my 2007 C230. The hood comes up about half an inch but will not open all the way, since I do not have a latch to pull on. Tried to unlatch by putting fingers through the grill but did not work. Does anyone know the exact art of opening the hood when the latch is broken? Also, is it fairly easy to install a new latch once I get the hood open? I'd hate to take it to the dealer (well the battery is dead so, can't even drive it. need to open the hood for a jump).

Any advise will be appreciated...

I had luck with needle nose pliers when I broke the same part on my 190 several years ago. Fish them in there and start pulling on what's left of the latch.

The latch is easy to replace. It is held on with a simple circlip, and the part is cheap. My coupe had a broken one when I bought it, the first thing I fixed. Look under the edge of the hood, it is possible to open it without the handle, I promise.

I had this problem as well on a 2005 C230.

First off, whatever you do (as suggested elsewhere here) do not pull the interior hood release as far as it can go! I broke mine, made the repair worse, and now have to buy ($12) & install another interior hood release. With the interior hood release broken I used a pair of pliers to pull on the end latch wire in the exact travel direction of the broken latch (horizontal, not up or down). That opened the hood.

After playing with the hood safety latch numerous times I just could not find out what was sticking. A Southern California car rust wasn't the culprit. I had read about other owners breaking their grill or sawing hood just to get to the hood safety latch release. My car needed oil so I had to get the hood open. I thought this is really gonna take some time & money!

But then I decided to reproach the fix an easier way, I WD40 It! I sprayed it thoroughly through the small hood opening and guess what, It opened on the very first time I tried. Once opened, I sprayed the safety latch and the hood release mechanisms. Don't wanna go through this ever again! I hope this simple fix helps someone.

If the cable is broken, you'll need to lift the car, remove the front wheels, then remove the fender liners and gain access to the latches where you can manually disengage them.
