Well after living with an inoperational sunroof for over a year, I've decided I want it fixed. I was able to score a replacement motor off eBay. Does anyone know of a DIY to get the headliner off only at the front edge to get enough clearance to undo the motor screws? Has anyone tried this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Which motor did you get? Do you have to solder it on? I need a new motor for my antenna but dont know which one to get. I opened up the unit and found out the motor can be easily replaced by basic soldering skills given it's the right motor. LMK
Well gents I have completed the job and glad to say successful. Here are a couple of thing I learned and will pass on so no others will get jammed.
1. The interior grab handle removal was a bit tricky for me. When pulling the 2 clips, just lift them away from the assembly with a flat blade screwdriver by about 1mm. Then use the same screwdriver to pry them out on the sides, no broken tabs. Don't need to remove both sides.
2. The source of my jam was the wind deflector arms, they caused the assembly to jam and thus strip the gear on the sunroof motor. Each deflector arm is held in place by a single screw on the body and a c-clip on the deflector. Simply remove and use 3M double sided tape to keep the deflector from jumping around when the sunroof is in use.
3. The a-pillar is not the easiest to remove, you will likely break a clip or two (as I did) but in the end it still works.
I had called the stealers previously and was quote $400 for the motor alone, but a quick check on ebay landed the needed part for only $100.
