Help - Will not go past 4000 rpm

There is something weird happening with my 2001 C240. The car won't go past 4000 rpm!

When I rev it at idle, it won't go past 4000 rpm. As if there is a rev limiter.

When I WOT it would hold at 4000 rpm and would not up shift.

When I downshift from higher gear into lower gear but not over revving at low gear, the car seems to be artifically cutting fuel or something....hiting at 3500 rpm only and would not go any higher!

Regular driving and acceleration is fine.....as long as it shifts under 4000 rpm.

?

Out of gear, it might have a lower rev limiter. I don't have the C240, but some cars do that since there is not much reason to run up to redline while out of gear. But in gear, that really means something is wrong. My gut says MAF, but you should start by checking for codes. You need not just stored but pending. Bring the numbers, not what the person with the tool says they mean.

Many MB's have a rev limiter at idle set at 4,000. As to why it's limiting you while you are driving is more of mistery. Is the check engine light on? Also, check the tranny fluid (you'll need to take it somewhere for this).

I have replaced the battery and everything is fine out

Either that, or I have erased the error codes stored.
