Hey guys, I need some help...My '04 C240 started making a kind of a ratching noise the other night. When I got up to go to work the next moring that noise started after I started the car but then went away. I drove to work with no problem but then as I was driving home the car began to overheat and my Coolant Warning came on and then went off. I exited off of the interstate and as I was pulling off the road my Altanator/Battery Warning came on and the car became hard to steer. In addition to these things earlier in the day I started my car in the parking lot and the noise was gone but my A/C was blowing hot. I am figuring that this is a belt, however this is just a guess. I have no car knowledge whatsoever. I had the car towed to the stealership on Wednesday night as they were closing the gates. However, today is Monday and they still haven't touched the car. There is a shop here that I normally use but the sealership was closer and I was using AAA so I had it towed there first. Can someone please give me an idea of what this could be and an estimated cost of repair. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Sounds like a belt to me. They shouldn't charge you too much for it as they run $60 list price and probably a half hour labor. Good luck. Don't know how many miles you have but I change my belts at about 50K miles on all my cars.
Ok guys...Stealership says the A/C Compressor locked up causing the belt to be unable to turn. According to them the car is under warranty for 100,000 miles so it costs me nothing...How does this work? I took the car in to have my A Service done and I paid for that so why would this be free. What else is covered under this warranty?
I actually have a '03. There was an issue with the level of service seeing as how my car sat for 4 days without ever being touched. However, the manager said the car was under warranty for 100,000 and that I had almost missed it by a few hundred miles. Plus I don't think that they would offer to pick up the cost of replacing and installing my A/C Compressor for the sake of customer service. Any one have an idea of what that might cost? I'm lost. I did not buy the car from a MB dealer. Do you have any idea what kind of warranty she could be talking about. Plus is it too late of me to get some type of extended warranty?
You can only buy the Mercedes Warranty at time of purchase. A lot of people on this site Poo Poo the warranty. I personally am glad I bought it for my 2002 C320. What I thought was a bad front turn signal bulb ended up needing the entire front lighting wiring harness replaced. Instrument cluster(Which I think is a standard item that frequently likes to go bad), Both Seat motor Control Modules, They even replaced the driver and passenger sun visors because there was a micro switch bad that controlled the vanity light gone bad, they replaced the Climate control unit(the actual part you push the buttons of) because it though summer was winter, etc, another time fixed a freon leak and recharged A/C ,
I did however replace the ash tray unit after purchasing part at dealer for $65. Thanks to this site, details on how to do it were a snap.
I really do appreciate all the people on this board who give great help
Most warranty companies won't touch a car with 100K miles on it but there are 3rd party warranties that cover MB but they are very expensive (and so is the MB Starmark extended warranty). They know MB's have a lot of electrical problems and price accordingly. For example, on my 2005 Canyon I just got a warranty last week, 4 additional years, 40K additional miles, zero deductible, bumper to bumper for $1,095, the same thing on my 2004 MB was quoted 3rd party for over $3,300, not worth it to me.
But lets talk A/C. You can get a brand new MB compressor and dehydrator for a C240 for $600 online. Then you got some refridgerant, belt and say 2 hours labor with an independant, sets you back $850. Would it justify a $3,300 warranty, not for me.
So which is better? A new 2008 C-350 for $32,000 or a new 2008 E-350 for $42,000 (both including a full 4 year warranty) ?
And would it be worth buying the extended warranty at time of purchase?
neither. there might be a new mid range engine coming to replace the 350. just speculation, but most likely it'll be true since the 350 right now is under powered vs the 335 and the upcoming new A4 as well as G35, etc.
Well your warranty sounds like you bought a CPO car which has a 100k mile warranty. The 272(350 v6) engine is not underpowered at all, it is detuned. All mercedes does it go in a reprogram stuff to get the extra power to beat the competitors. E350 or C350 are both good choices just drive them as see which one you like more.
