Post weird wearing on rear brake pads?

On a 2003 c240 4matic, I got the brake pad light the other day so I decided to change out the rear pads first then the front ones. When I pulled the rear pads off, the were not completely on the rotor.

Basically, the front edge of the pad extended to where it should, but the back edge of the pad stuck off the edge of the rotor a quarter to half an inch or so, making it to where the pads would actually contact them selfs when worn down half the thickness of the rotor.

Is this extension off the back of the rotor normal on these cars? Did someone install the wrong rotor during the last brake job?
