recently brought my 2004 c230 kompressor to the dealer because the brakes were squeaking.
have had this car for less than a year and put 9,000 miles on it so far. (i think theres more than 40,000 miles on it total)
dealer told me i needed new rotors/brakes for the front. I asked how badly i needed them he said i have about 1,000 miles to go.
i asked how much. he said 650. i said ill call you back.
so in 1000 miles my service b is due. should i get my brakes done then or wait until the light comes on or not go to the dealer at all cause to me 650 sounds like a rip-off and i feel like it's too early to have to get new brakes. (its only been 8 months)
also i bought the warranty - 5 years/100,000miles. apparently i was wrong when i thought the warranty would cover the brakes?
what to do?
dealerships are always bullshitting ppl into getting stuff they don't need, but since your car has around 40k miles total depending on how hard the previous owner used the car front rotors usually needs to be replaced around 45k-50k miles.
650 is fair quote from the dealer given that they are quoting you $110-130 each for the rotors and probably $70-80 for the pads plus 3 hour labor. Of course you can always go to a MB specialized shop. rotors, pads and labor never cost more than $450.
why would the extended warranty cover brakes? they are a wear item. This is not the BMWUSA maintainance program where they cover your brakes to lure in buyers.

You'll know when you have about 1,000 miles to go because the brake pad warning light will come on. It's common for any dealer to tell you that you need brakes when you come in whining about brake squeal. The price for a brake job depends on if you have a 2004 or a 2004.5. The 2004.5 are more expensive, maybe $450, the 2004 brakes should be about $400 with rotors at a dealer but those rotors should last through a cutting. Labor should not be more than one hour, especially with new rotors, that's easier than cutting them.
Brakes pads, rotors, squeal is not covered under warranty.
Dude i was quoted the same on my front breaks here at Houston MB dealership for my 05C230K and that was around 38k, took the car to a mercedes speacialized shop and got the rotors and pads done for close 450$ drove 3,000 miles since, got my service B done all looks good, dont pay the dealership premium on labor.
just got mine done at 52k miles on a 2006 c230 ss v6 at local MB shop
2 front drilled rotors (zimmermann) - 230.00
2 front pads - 52.00
2 hour labor - 100.00
total 382.00 includes tax
Park Place Mercedes quoted....
350.00 labor
440.00 set of front rotor
100.00 set of pads
total 890.00 before tax
oh and sensors each run 150.00 so better to do it before it comes on... i was really close on that one. plus sensors you have to purchase them at the dealers... i couldn't find any else where... reason why i went ahead and did them before it came on.

I know, typical dealer marking up list price on parts to make up for lackluster sales in their showroom. They list for $6.75, what is that, a 50% mark up. $440 for rotors, ouch, they list for $246 for the pair, heck that's close to 100% markup. At least the pads they didn't mark up so much
Remember how you bargained shopped that car when new, happy to get 10% off the list price. You're paying for it now with huge markups on replacement parts.
Hmm, reminds me, time for another free car wash, the only thing left that's fairly priced the dealership. Thanks to all for overpaying on service and parts so that I can get free car washes
I did mine my self. I put MONROE branded brake pads on it ( semi mets). These are smooth , quiet, had the wear sensor wires in them, and I lost 99% of the dust accumulating on my wheels. I paid $75 for the pads and a local parts store cut the rotors for $10 each. No special tools needed to do this. I did it in about an hour.
I was looking into the little garage on jericho tpke (huntington) for the brakes. They gave an estimate for around 300 but they have some pretty bad reviews. Does anyone know of any reliable MB shops in suffolk county (New York)? Thanks for all the replies.
