Hi John, I suppose if you had the tools it wouldn't be hard. I just had the alternator replaced on a 2001 C240. I'd suggest taking it to a local mechanic and/or a trusted MB dealer. I had one dealer try to tell me it was my sunroof panel then another more qualified one find out that it was the alternator. Once the alternator was replaced it fixed the problem once and for all.
First thing is you have to try and charge the battery. When it's fully charged it should read about 12V with a meter. Then start the car and put it at a high idle, if it goes to 13-14V then it's the battery, if not it's the alternator or regulator. You can get a rebuilt for about $200 in the U.S. vs $800 for a new part from dealer. Also you can go to an alternator repair place and they can rebuild yours for $60-80. Typically it's the alternator as it's the one with all the moving parts.

I had the exact same problem. Replaced the battery (wasn't the problem). Then the failed alternator blew some fuses leading to a lengthy diagnosis.
Got a remann'ed Bosch from local store for $187. It came with the pulley mounted and I replaced it in my driveway. Old alternator was a Valeo.
Anyway... the alternator is easy to replace if you've worked on cars before. I've never worked on a Mercedes and it took me 30 minutes of labor to change the alternator. There are two bolts, one plugged wire and one live lead that is bolted to its connector.
** Make sure you disconnect the battery FIRST !! **
The other thing to do is pull the plastic air feed (it snaps on and off) and use a wrench on the serpentine belt idler to release tension for removal and replacement of the belt.
I have this problem at the moment in my C200K.
The dash display says "Battery/Alternator - Visit Workshop !" (love the exclamation mark). I've had the car looked at and apparently the alternator is on its last legs. I've been quoted a lot of money for a factory replacement and about $500 (US) plus labour to repair it. Are the alternatives ? Does anyone out there have the product codes for remanufactured units or even the part number for the original ? I take it that these units are 14V 120A.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Chris
I bought my replacement at a local generic autoparts store.
I'm not sure what you have available to you there in Australia but I would start with your local parts suppliers. You can save 75% by using a remanufactured unit.
If you google Trademotion Mercedes you can find some online parts suppliers in the US.
Chances are your voltage regulator has failed. Voltage regulators and bearings are available for much less than an entire generator.

You're in the OC- do you have any recommendations for a place to rebuild an alternator? My c230 Komp just started doing the same thing, with weird sounds! So it has got to be the alternator. But at 51K miles?!?

Baum's Auto Supply on Marguerite in Mission Viejo will sell you a remanufactured Bosch alternator for $187

Bosch components can go at any time. They are built to the same lasting standards as Lucas used in Triumphs and MG's.
If you go to yellowpages.com and enter "alternator repair" and your zip it will list all the places in town and some out of town. There is one in Lake Forest that claims precision remanufacture of starters and altenators. If you take your alternator to a kragen, autozone, pepboys, baums, many of these places can bench check your alternator and tell you if it's bad, and what part of it is bad. Save you from spending coin on something that may not be bad, not that it was great to begin with
