Help! Panorama Roof - Benzworld.org

I just bought a 2002 C230 Coupe with a panorama roof. I got it a week and a half ago and before I bought I had all the basics checked out at a dealership. This week, my sunroof stopped working. The shade over the panorama roof wont close and it makes a very bad sound. I took it to the dealership and they said it would take roughly $3000!!!! to fix because they would have to replace the entire roof. How true is this? What can I do? I bought from a private owner and now I have a broken car. I'm very depressed and need any help I can get!

That's a bummer.

Well I would find a shop that specializes in Mercedes near you. They are considerably less than the dealer and usually better.

Hi littlebenz21, welcome to the forum. These panoramic roofs have always been problematic. I have also been given a $3000 dollar estimate on the repair of my coupes panoramic... On your vehicle is it just the sunshade that is not working? I know exactly what you are talking about, because mine does the same thing if the sunshade is opened completely, but if your roof is still opening your not in as bad of condition as I am...

This is what I have to do in order to get the sunshade working again. First you need to remove the center light cover on the panoramic control panel located on the interior roof paneling. Just use a small flathead to pop the cover off. You will see two little slots on the cover where you insert a flathead to nudge it open. After you have the light cover off you will see two clips that can be pulled outward. These clips will unlock the entire control panel. To remove it pull the clips outward, and use the flathead again to nudge the panel down.

When you get the panel off do not unplug the wiring harness. Just let it hang there, and you will see two manual controls for the panoramic roof. You should have a wrench somewhere in your vehicle that will fit into the manual cranks. The left crank controls the opening, and closing of the panoramic roof. The right crank controls opening and closing of the sunshade. Turn the right crank some until the sunshade starts to close a little. After doing this replace everything, and the sunshade should now close with the electronic controls. You just have to avoid opening the sunshade completely, or it will get stuck in place again.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will mess with it tonight and get back to you about how things turn out. The roof itself used to open with one touch of the button but now it stops itself. It has be kind of worried that it might get stuck open so I haven't been using it. The dealership mention there was cables that have a tendancy to go bad. Do you know anything about that? Is that the source of this problem as well? I found a few things on the internet about it, but I was really looking for a mechanically savvy person's opinion in oppose to someone just complaining about the bill. I'm glad I posted here.
