C240 hard to start

Got a 2003 C240 4MATIC. for the last several months I've had an intermittent problem starting the car. The battery is just fine, just put a new one in as the old one was five years old and I had the battery die on my 2002.

When I turn the key, sometimes it cranks and starts, sometimes it will crank for less than a second and not start, sometimes it does nothing. I've had it to the dealer twice. As expected, I keep getting "unable to duplicate problem".

I've already paid $160 to have the flywheel/starter teeth lubricated. They claim that can cause my symptoms. They also tell me that there are no service bullitins on this. Don't know if this is relevant but had the radiator changed and the transmission flushed maybe three months ago. I had one for bad Valeo radiators and was getting rough shifts and tourqe convertor shudder pretty bad before they were able to replicate problem on second or third visit for same.

Any ideas?

OK hold it; the car doesn't CRANK? That is.....it does not turn over?
It's like completely dead? No sound, nada, nothing, zilch?

Or it does not turn on?
It just spins and spins?

I just brought my C240 in. My symptoms: gradually worsening (ie harder to start) starts, eventually to the point where it cranks but will not fire anymore. Not exactly the same as you; but I replaced my crank positioning sensor (CPS), that didn't help, so I took it in and they found that the relays/fuse box in the back got wet somehow and fried the electronics back there. I had a trunk leak.

But if it cranks but is not firing, it's probably the fuel pump or relay. (and or wiring to those things).

So far it cranks and starts eventually. I haven't been stranded yet thought I've been worried. This morning on each turn of the key: click....rrrrrr......rrrrrr......click....rrrrr... ..rrrrr.....rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvroooomm mmmmm!

It will crank but for less than a second or just click. Battery is fine. No other problems.
Its doing it most of the time now. Started out on infrequent so its getting worse. Last two trips to the dealer it didn't do it once.
