Hey Guys,
I have a 2005 C230 Kompressor
42000 miles.
I'm in the middle of buying it and the other day, it started smoking a little bit out of the exhaust.
Long story short, It was brought to Mercedes Benz and they told me the engine is sludged up.
They want $5000 to do whatever they want to do to it.
I can't spend that much right now.
I was told that I can go get an oil change, and use an additive for the last quart of oil that cleans the system up, drive it for a day, and then get another complete oil change right after, and this will help out...???
What are everyone's opinion on this.
I want to do whats right, when I can afford it, but I still need my CAR!
Problem is, sludge solidifies and clogs up the very narrow passageways and pickup lines.
engine flush can only do so much. At the very least, i'd take off the cylinder head, and oil pan to inspect and clean in addition to flushing 10 times over.

so do you own the car or are you buying it? if you are buying it, dont. a sljudged up engine can be fixed, but it isnt cheap. doing an oil change and using additives doesnt work. sludge cakes up in small crevisis and its hard to break unless the engine is disassembled and cleaned.

I'm more curious who -and, how- determined the motor's "sludged up". Did they pull the cam cover and see "sludging", or was this some hocus-pocus we-can-just-tell load of codswallop.

I Leased it, and Im in the process of filling out finance papers for it.

It was a Mercedes Benz Dealership, I believe that they did pull the cam cover off, but I dont know, because I was not there watching. My service advisor used the term "gunked up" with me,
Basically, is it cheaper to do the whole-take the engine apart and clean it- at another place?

HI,
What does the originally warranty say - is this an emissions problem if you are blowing smoke - is the poor m271 covered under the factory warranty? I would not buy a car with a sludge or "sludge' engine - find another one - there are plenty of C230s available.
What is the history of the car - are you the original registrant? Did you follow the factory oil change intervals with approved oil - if so - I would follow up with a defect and a warranty issue - I would NOT hand over $5,000 for a problem that should not be yours...
