I've been hearing for about a month now a small rattling noise from under the middle of the vehicle only during acceleration and after decreasing my speed on the highway. In other words, the car is fine during idling. During initial acceleration there is no issue; however when I decrease my speed from 60 mph to 40 mph on the highway and accelerate again, I hear this small rattling noise.
I thought it could be a Catalytic Converter issue, so i took it to the dealer since the Catalytic Converter is supposed to be under warranty. The dealer said that the Catalytic Converter has 80K miles warranty and my car has 88k miles (which is unfortunate cause things break only when there is no warranty on the car). Do you think this is a Catalytic Converter issue? If it is, why don't i hear this rattling noise at all times? Is there an easy fix for this?
Hi guys, i narrowed down the issue to the passenger side catalytic converter. Its making noise (some marbles moving inside of it). Is there a way of fixing it without spending $550 for the part only at the dealer?
Dang; your in a pickle.
Is there any negotiation room here? Ask the Stealership Service Manager, if you can split the cost? Maybe he foots the bill for the CC and you pay for Labor?
It's only 8K over the warranty.
8K stupid little miles. Sheesh man.
We had a '95 Dodge Ram and the cat started rattling. We drilled a small hole near the center and installed a screw (about 3 - 4 inches long) in it. That stopped the rattling. Only problem is, if you live where they have emission testing, you will not pass.
??? And this accomplished what? Even worse is telling a crowd of mercedes owners of your "fix". A cat contains a fiberglass honeycomb "biscuit", that eventually breaks down from heat. Misfires, and improper FA ratios can speed it's demise.
The rattling is due to it breaking down into pieces, and or dust! Which will clog the cat & muffler, and cause more damage, fry the valves, head, and pistons. So WTF is putting a screw in the middle of it going to do? Nothing. Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard and sounds like one of those "you know you're a ******* when" jokes.
:asshat:
I checked the area few days ago and didn't find any rust (looks pretty clean actually). Today while i was heading to work, my car lost power, check engine light came up, and couldn't drive more than 30mph. I'm taking it to the service shop today and buy the CAT from the dealer (~$600). I just hope the muffler and the rest of the exhaust system is not clogged :-(.
I changed the cat and the car is back to normal. I think the price for the passenger car is accurate ($550). The price for the Driver cat is ~$1000. eitherway, what a ripoff. Anyway, if you hear a minor rattling noise at an early stage, check with your dealer first cause it has an 80k miles warranty (mine died shortly afterwards); otherwise i recommed that you change it in couple of weeks max
Yes, I stand corrected, it is Ceramic. I was thinking of Corning who helped develop the current honeycomb style vs. the beads of old. And they make lots of fiberglass. But yes, it's ceramic.
Mine went out, I had grey dust coming out the tail, CEL's for misfires on various cylinders, and when it was replaced, you could see what a mess it was.
A huge amount of dust from the broken down ceramic substrate, inside it was broken into chunks, and it absolutely was plugging things up.
And a plugged up exhaust can cause the things I mentioned.
I know this as I has head work covered under warranty on a Toyota I had, which had a poorly designed exhaust.
They repaired the head, and replace the exhaust system.
It's rattling because it's hosed. I still say using a screw to fix it is pretty *******. You're solving the symptom not the problem. :flamg:
If putting a screw into a hosed cat is your idea of "technological know how"
then I can only say, "You know yer a ******* when; putting a a screw into a hosed cat is your idea "technological know how"
What Buell said is true, thats a good price. Mine would've been 1200 at the dealer for the part.
Got a Magnflo instead, and passed emissions.
The plugged cat did not cause all the other issues. It is the other way around. I know this because I am a cylinder head specialist.
