Oil Filter Question

2005 1.8L Kompress engine. Anyone know if MB is phasing out their fleece material oil filter (271-180-00-09) to paper type (271-180-01-09)? I purchased two filters from my local dealer. What is strange is the invoice stated the fleece part number but the filter boxes marked as the paper material part number. When I inquire, dealer indicated MB supercedes to the 271-180-01-09 part number. It doesn't make sense to me that MB would replace back to paper element (fishy smell). I decided to return the product back to the dealer. I am planning ask Mercedes for clarification. Do anyone in here have any comment on this topic? Please advice? Thank you!

Simple enough answer is this: the paper filter sucks. If you want to extend the life of your oil get the fleece filter.

Yeah, fleece should be better than paper. What get me steam was my local dealer charge the fleece filter price but gave me paper one... On top it all, he said the paper filter superceded the fleece material. B.S. in my opinion... purely trying to rip me off. I will have to order my parts from the internet now as they are the only dealer in town. The next nearest one is 1 hour drive. Anyone know a decent mail in dealer where I can order parts on-line?

This is very confusing. The part number (271-180-00-09) I taught was the paper filter. It is the yellow one, is this not the paper filter? I had read that the yellow one was the paper filter and that the fleece filter was white.

I am sure the confusion comes from when people with different engines say yes or no based on their filter and not the filter that is being asked about in the post.

So I want to ask, for those with the m271 engine, which is the fleece filter? THe yellow one?

Yellow color is the paper filter with part number 271-180-00-09. Fleece is the white color with part number 271-180-01-09. The dealer charge the fleece filter price but gave me the paper filter. He said the paper filter actually cost $1 more in price. Beware, some dealer do try to rip-off their customer. I won't go back to that dealer, unless, absolutly no other option. I wanted to pass on my experience..alway look at your invoice to product.

Interesting, I just went and checked my most recent purchase from the dealer. The invoice says 271-180-00-09, the sale box says 271-180-01-09 and when I opened it the filter looks like yellow paper! Clearly MB has chaned something.

The yellow paper is made by Hengst which you can purchase from parts store for $12. The fleece (271-180-00-09) cost $20 which I am having difficulty finding. I am waiting for a response from Mercedes if paper superceded the fleece...interesting to see if dealer took the "bait and switch" route. Anyone know where I can purchase a fleece filter?

Let me know what you hear, because when I purchased the car, I had a yellow paper filter when I changed the oil for the first time. Makes me think that the dealer feels the paper filter will last the 13K change interval.

I checked both of the links in the previous posts and they are selling yellow paper filter as the only filter for M271 engine. One is cheaper though $6.95, which is a very good price. I still would like to get the fleece filter since it is better.
