Auto Transmission Oil Pan Leaks

Changed the engine oil and filter on my 2004 C230K this weekend (thanks to all the DIY posts) and everything looked really clean except that the transmission oil pan seems to be leaking, drips coming off the bolt heads and none of the bolts were loose. The gasket which is like a 1/4 inch thick also seemed soaked. Is this very typical? People who are changing the trans fluid themselves are you putting any RTV sealer on the replacement gasket?

This is actually a common problem for MB, they leak at the seals by the electrical connection. I haven't heard of it hapening to any 2004's yet so I haven't looked but the part is cheap, $8 and I'm doing it to my kid's SLK on Friday.

It is a common problem that we see at the dealer. We usually just replace the Trans. Connector. If the car is getting a flush and filter we remove the pan and put a new gasket. The pan is held in place with aluminum bolts that only get used 1 time. They are torqued to 4Nm, which isn't very much so be careful not to break any of them.

Hmm, OK, I didn't look hard enough to notice a connector. So can I just replace the connector by itself or do I have to replace the connector along with the oil pan gasket?

Thanks In Advance,

Dave.

I have a 2004 c240 and I have had the same problem with just 1 bolt. It would leak from the center passenger side bolt (on the pan) and it is a maddening problem. What do you guys mean by trans connector?

I beg to differ on the one time use pan bolts? The bolts appeared to be the same steel bolts that I have seen on other mercs?? mine were reused w/out any issues? I have changed my trans fluid twice in 115K miles.

Try thoroughly cleaning the bolt and bolt hole and put a light coating of RTV sealant on the bolt threads and torque per specs.

they are stretch bolts. you can reuse them, but benz do not recommend it.

Sounds to me like nothing more than an improper Gasket Installation.
Recommend you Drop the Pan again, Saving the Fluid
Make sure the Gasket is not PINCHED or is laying cock-eyed.
When reinstalling the Bolts use Thread Lock and at First Hand Tighten them
Then Tighten them down.
Wipe everything down real clean. Not a lick of Oil anywhere.
This is important so if you do have a Leak, you will know it instantly and where it
comes from.

I did not use any RTV Sealant. The Gasket was Plenty Fat Enough and lightly
draped over the side of the Pan.

I did a DIY on this in the W202 Section replete with pictures.
