Question 2007 C230 engine

Hi,

I'm looking into buying a 2007 C230 which has the V6 engine. Does anyone know how the V6 performs compared to the kompressor engine in terms of reliability and maintenance specifically and also performance, etc. I have heard that many people prefer the kompressor engine to the V6, why is that?

Thanks.

in terms of reliability, the new v6 would be a better choice. the 272 engine hasnt been out that long, only for a few years but so far i havent seen any major issues with it. now the kompressor engine is a 4 cylinder 271 engine. they are known for misfire issue related to leaking valves, worn valve springs, vent hoses cracking, etc... since i have driven both on numerous occasions i feel the v6 is quicker then the supercharged 4 cylinder. sounds better too. just my opinion

The V6's are having a few issues with camshaft adjusters, but i have to say overall the V6 is 10 times better than the 1.8

It's been a while since I've driven a 4 cyl 230; my son had one of the first SLK 230 Kompressors and I got to keep it while he was on deployment. I think it was faster than my present '06 230 sport, but the V-6 feels like it has more torque. I never really extended the SLK (How do you say "Sorry, kid; I wrecked your car while you were off fighting the Arabs!" but I know he managed to scare himself enough that he traded it in on a Boxster.

I drove plenty of 04-05 C230k sedans and 06-07 C230 sedans for loaner and just cars between friends.

the C230k is more fun to drive, the older 5 spd auto is more responsive and doesn't hunt the gears like the C230 with their 7 spd.

which is quicker...I would probably say the C230k with the M271 ever so slightly because it weight less and only loose 10hp. torque rating's similar.

which handles better...I would pick the C230k as well because it's lighter up front.

which has better gas mileage...you guessed it the C230k.

which is more refined and sounds better...I would probably give the C230 with the V6 the nod.

What is the camshaft adjuster problem

My check engine light starting coming on after 35,000 miles on my 06 and I took it in to the dealer and they told me they had to replace the cam actuator. What exactly is this and what was malfunctioning. Would this be an expensive repair if the car wasnt under warranty?

my personal opinion (and it may be a biased opinion b/c of what i have), is that the c230k is a better performing car...especially with the manual...the manual's response time is definitely noticeably quicker than the v6's. but it's not just my opinion...everyone i've actually spoken to prefers a manual kompressor over the v6.

the Kompressor engine is about .8sec quicker to 60mph in Manual and 1sec faster in Auto.

This is based on MB data.

The Kompressor has 11 lb-ft more torque and weighs 165lbs less (off the front end)

The torque curve is flatter in the Kompressor and has a wider range of torque

There is at least 180lb-ft from 2000-6000RPM

After having driven a bunch of 05 C230k loaners I was really thinking of getting one to use as a daily driver but held off until I could drive an 06 with the new multivalve V6 and the 7 speed auto. After finally getting a chance to play with the new 06 model I rushed back to the dealer and purchased the last 05 kompressor he had in inventory.

I think they finally got the drivetrain sorted out with the 3.0 engine on the W204 but I don't like the fact that Mercedes is following the Japanese cars with the higher beltline and smaller windows.

Go with a 6 ... any type of forced induction leads to problems in the long run. More parts to replace once they go bad.
