I'm forgetting if this is a supercharger 1.8 on the '06 or if they got rid of it in '05?
here's both of my thoughts:
I had a supercharged '05 GTO that did that. It turned out to be an oil seal in the supercharger AND a leaky valve stem seal, creating a small dot of oil in the first cylinder and in the intake during shutdown periods that required a burn off before it looked like it went away.
I have also had a smoky start on a turbo-charged rally car that was having "blow-by" issue where oil mist was pushing past the PCV and back into the intake. A "catch can" solved that one.
The reason I posted about the turbo car was because any crankcase that runs under both positive and negitive values from forced induction may get a stuck or funky PCV, or even excessive blow by. Try rerouting the PCV vent FROM the intake to a catch can, then over to your intake and drive it for a week AS AN EASY AND INEXPENSIVE way to see if that solves it before it goes to factory service.
NOT supercharged ideas:
Well, oil is getting into the combustion chamber somehow!
Start again at that intake, take apart the portion where it attaches to the manifold and see if you find any oily soot in there to start. Usually if you do, hunt it back to the airbox and see if you're getting excessive collection in the airbox from a crazy recirculation line or poorly placed PCV, and catch can that bugger if a cleaning didn't solve it with a week of driving in-between your cleaning and recheck.
If it isn't stopping, and of course, depending on the miles on your engine, you may have worn/scored/scratched valve stems or seals, a scored ring, or some other more malicious and less obvious issue. 99% of the stuff I've seen on a smoky start had to do with rings that never seated properly or valves with a "drip".
Nutshell version:
Forced induction - Catch can & PCV check
Not FI - I'd put cash on worn valve stems, seals, ect, dripping into the cylinder, but start with a good intake check
Thanks for the advice guys. It does sound like somethings leaking down and getting burned off. With only 4K on the engine (06 is a new normally aspirated design I believe), this shouldn't be happening.
I do park on a bit of an incline (nose up) on the driveway. I'm keeping an eye on the oil, and it isn't showing any consumption.
Burning oil during the break-in period is normal. If it seems like it is getting worse, bring it in to the dealer. If they say it is normal, drive it for the rest of the break-in period. At the end, if it worse or not better, bring it in to the dealer let them know it is not better. If they still refuse to take action, and assuming there is another dealer nearby, bring it to them for a second opinion. If they also refuse, then it would be benefitial to you to contact Mercedes-Benz as soon as possible. NOTE: it is also a very good idea to make an appointment so you have proof that you voiced your concerns with your dealer.
