just joined the forum... I purchaced my first MB 2003 C240W4 this past June and I love the car but I'm a tinkerer by nature and wonder if anyone's had any experience or luck getting a little more snot out of their 240 with "simple" bolt on or ECU mods... I wish I could have afforded a 280 or 350 at the time...
Forgive my possibly stupid question but can anyone tell me why the 2.6L has such a lag in 'off-the-line' throttle response compared to other MB's or why this engine seems to "spool" almost like a force inducted motor (without the power) once you get above 4k RPM...
I put on k&N filters and it helped a bit. As to y it picks up slow, well it's a MBZ trait on the small engines, maybe cause it's a 5-speed. The only thing that bothers me is that the gas pedal is extremely heavy.
Thanks for the info... The mods mentioned above seem like more realistic solutions than forced induction (at least for me anyway)... I'm just tired of having to shy away from some "friendly competition" with kids and their worked Civics or STI's... I know and they know the MB comes out on top in class, style, comfort, safety and just plain pimpness but I want to be able to play when the light turns green too...
The C240 had sort of an odd engine. It's painfully slow off the line but once you are moving over 30mph, it's as fast as a C230 or faster. The only cure I can think of for that is to get a 3.67 rear end. You can find them out there sometimes. It will raise the RPM sooner at launch and get you moving faster than any pulley/ECU/CAI. Exhausts (headers/muffler/hi-flow cat) will mostly give you more power at high end but that's not where you need it, you need it down low.
The only thing you can do to give it a real boost (about 80HP) is a Kleeman S/C kit, figure at least $10K installed. At least with that you'll be able to hang with some nice Civics, maybe not beat an STI but at least make not laugh as hard.

I'd love to add a S/C, but the 10K price tag would get me divorced faster than I'd EVER be able to get the car to go... Let me ask you this though and please excuse me if it is a stupid question: Is The 2.6L block the same block as the C320, more specifically the C32 block?? If so could I in theory use the S/C, manifold heads, and ECU off of say a wrecked C32AMG?? My best friend is a MB salesman with a knack for finding and negotiating on stuff like this... I know I could have avoided all this if I had just bought a damn C32 or (sigh) C55... champaigne taste on a beer budget, you know how it goes...
