All season or snow tires?

Hello Folks. Have to get a new set of tires for my car. I was thinking of getting all season tires. Just wanted to know how does the C-240 perform on snow with all seasons? Will i ultimately have to get the snow tires later when it starts snowing? Also, is it possible to go one point wider in tires on the 16 inch wheels? Right now i have 205-55-16.Is that a good idea or no? Thanx for any suggestions in advance.

RE: All season or snow tires?

All season tires are a "compromise" between summer/winter performance. They will work for you in winter, but to get best performance in snow, you will neet snow tires. I'm sure you will see lots of snow in Canada.

I drove a front-wheel drive Honda Accord on all season tires in the NorthEast U.S. for a number of years. I finally switched to snows & could not believe the difference. The Accord had the same grip as AWD SUV's/pickup trucks.

Going one size larger is OK, as long as the diameter remains the same.

RE: All season or snow tires?

Hi, Azatrum...

Welcome to the forum. We sort of beat the snow tires issue to death a month or so ago, based on a post that I made after the purchase of a C-240 4Matic Wagon (you can search this forum for the complete thread).

I live a few miles South of you in "sunny" Syracuse, NY and have used snow tires for years...wouldn't drive here without 'em. Only problem is that we have 11 months of winter and one month of poor sledding!

For my newly acquired wagon, I bought a set of wheels from the nice folks at Tirerack.com I already had a set of 205/55/16in snows from my previous car that I had mounted on the new rims. But Tirerack DOES recommend going one size NARROWER for snows.

Enjoy your car...Voor

RE: All season or snow tires?

You are absolutely correct that narrower is better for snow tires. My above comment regarding wider tires only applies to non-snow tires.

I'd change that to say that All-season tires may work for you in winter.

You may want to consider snow tires to be safe..

I believe Toronto snows more than Vancouver.. I'm probably not planning to drive my car there's snow on the ground..

Yeah, i use the rabbit foot as an anology to snow tires. The rabbits feet are wider so they don't fall through the snow, so that means wide tires are bad for snow.
