Another Newbie just joining the forum. Thanks for all the great information! I had an '01 C240 and sold it for an '05 C240. The '05 has a stock single play CD player and I want to add the OEM CD changer in the glovebox. I bought one for an '05 C class and took it to the dealer to have it installed. They said it can't be done. The only way that you can have a changer with this car is direct from the factory. Has anyone else experienced this? It doesn't seem to make sense. Is there a work around so that the changer functions can be accessed from the steering wheel and the center console? BTW I did the same thing on the '01 and it worked great.
Thx in advance.
most dealers won't installed anything unless it came as an option from the factory. their favorite quotes are "i need your VIN" and "it cannot be done". just take it to a/v shop to get it installed...

Depends on the dealer some will install and some wont, try calling another dealer. Factory says it can be installed by the factory only but the wires are there. You will need the CD changer,(a "MOST" fiber optic changer)bracket,2 fiber optic cables and some screws. Will need to be version coded to function. Yes the changer will operate with the steering wheel controls. Whats your location ?

Thanks for your help. I live in Seattle, WA. Last time I did this with my '01, I had an A/V dealer install it and the dealer got it to shake hands with the car. I wanted to use the dealer for the whole process this time because the A/V dealer wasn't very good about tearing the car apart and putting it back together. Is there a way to contact MB directly to confirm that it will talk to the car properly?
Just a quick update. I called another dealer and they said the same thing as the first dealer (IT CAN'T BE DONE!). Next I called MB USA and was told that MB is working on a patch to allow a changer to be added in the '05. Personally I don't understand this since they install them in the factory. Clearly they have all the communication, software and hardware issues already figured out so what is left to figure out?
Oh well, at least they are working on it. I'll keep you posted when they have the update.
I have an '02 C240 and I purchased a MB OEM 6 disk changer off of EBay. I purchased a Fiber adapter for the changer from the dealer (don't recall the part name), and I installed it myself... It works fine in the '02... not sure why it wouldn't work in an '05.
If you have a CD in the head unit playing, and you press, say, #4 - does a message appear saying that a CD changer is not installed? If so, I think you will have no problem... My 2 cents...
Not to disway you from getting a CD changer, but if I had an '05 I would get the iPod integration kit, stick an iPod in the glove box with my favorite songs and for about the same money you would have something much better and still be able to play an occasional CD. I use the Aux-In on my '04 comand radio with my iPod and I never use my CD changer, actually wastes too much valuable glove box space.
Thanks for the response guys.
Edhead: My understanding is that MB made some significant changes in '05 so unfortunately it is not that simple, frustrating, but not that simple.
Buellwinkle: The ipod idea is good however I already bought a changer. I like the idea of gaining back some real estate in the glovebox. I don't know anything about the ipod kit. Can you control the ipod from the steering wheel? I just have the stock radio/cd player installed. Can the ipod functions be accessed this way also? Thx

Just get the iPOD kit. Why invest more money in old world technology.
Otherwise for $30 you can fit the AUX cable and plug in any old MP3 player.
