How to repair adjustable steering wheel

A person in my office owns a 2001 C240. When he enters his car, it automatically adjusts the seat and steering wheel. The adjustment for the steering wheel no longer works because the plastic screw or wheel that adjusts the column is broken or stripped. He asked the MB dealer to replace as a warranty issue but they refused. The part cost nothing so he wants to know if anyone knows how to replace the darn thing, has a photo or schematic drawing to how to get to it?

RE: How to repair adjustable steering wheel

The dealer is in the San Francsco Bay Area, California. The dealer refused because his car just went over the 4 year warranty last month. He wants to know whether other MB owners have experienced this steering wheel problem. He also wants to know why MB couldn't make it metal instead of plastic.

RE: How to repair adjustable steering wheel

You arent alone. Mine went last summer. I'm surprised yours lasted all the way from 2001. It's pretty common for them to break. It's a small coupler that connects the up/down motor to the gear and it is the biggest pain in the @#$Q% to change. Let the dealer have fun doing it. Pretty much everything with the electric steering movement uses the rubber coupler and it's such a weak design. The part is only $4 or $5 dollars too so that just adds to the frustration.

This seems to be a big fault...I turned my auto adjust OFF after a few thousand miles...

I wonder how

A. Hard it is to replace
B. How much time it takes

Seems to me more time than skill

Did anyone get their steering wheel fixed? My 03 C320 steering wheel refuses to adjust up or down. The warranty went out the window in October. I have to drive it like an old lady with the wheel at an awkward angle. How much is the cost to fix this? I can only say that this car has more Gremlins than a Steven Speilberg movie.

That's why you should always get an extended warranty.

Bringing this thread back after a couple years to see if anyone has completed a successful DIY repair. Considering the age of the cars, I imagine many have experienced this failure by now (I have). The part is less than $5 but the labor charge to repair is eye-poppingly high due to how much interior trim has to be removed to access the broken plastic coupling. I heard a rumor the repair can be completed by removing only one piece beneath the steering column and using patience and long-nosed pliers. Anyone know the secret?
