You can, but it will change the texture of the carpet (it's not attractive)...

There is a product called Capture (you can get it at Sears and most major carpet dealers) that dry-cleans the carpet and is done in 30 minutes and ready to use. I have the Java interior and with once a month use, the carpets in the car are flawless. There is *no* soap residue to attract more dirt...
