I dont know bro, I drive Passats, and souped up GLI's all day for work, and I have to say, i honestly dont think any of them could touch my C320... An R32 yea more than likely, but even that is way over priced in my opinion.
I guess it depends on the level up the engine development. A 300hp 1.8T would smoke most 4 wheeled things on the street. YOu can get that with a K4 Turbo, larger oil cooler, and a few more goodies. Of course, in that case we aren't talking apples to apples... but the price difference wouldn't be that far off. Whether or not one thinks it is "worth" it... well that's very subjective. Then again, if you want something FAST, get 2 wheels. [;)]

RE: Mercedes vs. Volkswagen
I used to drive a B4 Audi 1.8 turbo and it was a bit of a mechanical/electrical nightmare. lots of issues always popping up. and similar VW/Audi's i have seen have had similar issues
comparing the 2 brands seems a close call considering they are similarly priced, but you gotta remember Mercedes has much much more expensive cars in its lineup above the C class. SL65 and maybach anyone?
so all that technology and reliability filters down the line.
VW on the other hand obviously dont have a lot of expensive technology (compared to SLs and Maybach ofcourse)
i must say though, audi cars and even some of the VW line have AWESOME dash build quality.

Bentley Continental GT, Lamborghini Murcielago, Porsche Carrera GT, VW Phaeton,... all VAG (Volkwagen/Audi Group),... all have plenty expensive technology which DOES filter down to the lower models.

For what you get VW's are a little pricy, considering most are "hecho en Mexico".
Yeah, and vehicles are so wonderfully constructed in the USA ... not. Personally, I feel my wife's VR6-engined Jetta is better built than my ML. It was Ferdinand Piƫch's stated aim to move VW upmarket to do battle with Mercedes Benz, and this can be seen in the Audi-like interior quality of recent VW's. In some markets (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and probably some others) Volkswagens are categorized as "prestige" cars already, and this will probably eventually happen here in North America as well.
Of course, lately Volkswagen does jostle with Mercedes in just about every consumer survey for the title of making the least reliable cars. But regardless of this, we are very happy with both and will probably remain a VW/Mercedes family.
