The Official C36 AMG Engine Internals pics thread :)
Hey guys,
well I assume you guys are smart enough to figure out what happened. While I was in there I figure I'd go ahead and take pics of this badboy. Honestly I was VERY impressed with the build quality, These really were the true hand built AMG engines with HWA stamps on everything. They really over built that motor to the extreme. The heads seemed very free flowing, I doubt you could get much more power out of them with a port and polish (maybe 5HP tops). An interesting thing I noticed was the intake valves were all black but the exhaust valves were all white. I have never seen this before, I guess AMG chose different metals for the valves (usually all 4 look the same in most motors). In Addition I was pretty surprised how big the pistons are these cylinders are pretty impressive to look at for a "small" 6 banger (definitely bigger than my S50 M3 engine obviously). You can see all the various bits and what not, It is truly a great engine and I can see why they can take twin turbo setups like its nothing b/c they are build like panzer tanks, virtually indestructible.
I also repainted my valve cover w/ duplicolor silver engine enamel and put a new AMG emblem on the plastic AMG panel b/c the old one was cracked and gross. The engine looks brand spanking new now with the new silver on it (instead of that nasty faded yellowish color that all M104s have now). I highly recommend if anyone is every doing it.
Needless to say I have a brand new engine now with all new gaskets and everything which should help increase the value of the car substantially b/c so few of these cars have documentation of both engine wiring harness & head gasket being done.
FYI - You can see just how well Seafoam cleans the intake runners. That black portion on the top of the last tip of the insides of the head is NOT a shadow it is black carbon soot. After seafoam you can see everything where the spray from the injector has been exposed is brand spanking new. If that isn't a testament to what a good engine cleaner seafoam is I dont' know what is.
Anyways I hope you enjoy these pics. Its truly great to see a true part of AMG history, the genesis from which all modern AMGs come from. Pretty cool if you ask me
ya honestly the suckers are huge, borderline Chevy V8 big. build quality really is something else and no wonder these engines can take crazy boost, they are overbuilt to the extreme, its a shame nobody has come with with performance head gaskets theres a REAL market for it on the M104s.
My shop however did put one some extra stuff (shalack somthing) its supposed to reinforce the headgasket to prevent it from every failing again, so this is probably the last head gasket that will ever have to go on the car (hopefully).
Either way its amazing to see her up close. I will have more pics of engine bay soon.
P.S. the motor pulls MUCH better now that the head gasket has been fixed and before I was getting steam out of the muffler (not a ton but enough to be noticable) now there is none so if any of you are getting any condensation out of your exhaust at all, you may have a head gasket ready to blow soon (disappearing coolant is always another sign).
about 112, shows you how damn amazing these motors are that it looks brand spanking new at 112k miles.
A few secrets. First I always use Chevron with Techron (the cleanest gas by far, it really does work). 2nd I use Seafoam in the gas tank at least 2x per year. Keep the engine brand spanking new .

The are different colours becuase of the different nature of the gasses the interact with. This is pretty common on most high mileage engines.
