recommened Mobile 1grade oil for California

Hello All,

Any recommendation on which grade of Mobile 1 supersynthetic oil should use for my '99 C280 sport w/ 45K miles on it. I live in California so it doesn't get too hot or cold.

From the mobile 1 website:

http://www.mobil1.com/supersyn/index.jsp

Seems like they recommend 0W-40. Does you guys agree with this?

Also, how often do you guys change oil. I've heard from 10K-15K miles and about 8 1/2 quarts for my car.

thanks

3K mile w/ 9quarts- not feasible

Hey Euro,

Not sure I have the time to change it that often and the money at $8 a quart and almost 9 quarts each change. I'm sure yours is even more since it's 8 cylinders. I put 60 miles each day on my c280 to get to work and that's not even weekends. So as you can see, the mileage adds up quit fast.

What kind of grade do you put on your c36?

thanks timecop369

You cannot go wrong with Mobil1 0W-40. You can use Mobil1 15W-50 if you cannot find 0W-40 or if you find it cheaper. $8 a qt is ridiculous! I pay about $4.50 a qt.
Changing a synthetic oil every 3K miles on an engine that runs well simply is a complete waste of money!Especially if you drive long distances (if you drive 500 miles a year, then I would change it once a year anyway).
I change my oil on both the C280 and the ML430 every 10K miles (which still may be overkill) but I'd rather err on the safe side.
Good luck!
Sergio

where do you get your mobile 1synthetic at Sergio at $4.50/quart

Hey Sergio,

Where do you get your Mobile1 Synthetic at? If it's that cheap, I wouldn't mind stock piling 3 cases. I tried searching on the web and w/ shipping and everything, it still comes out to about $7.50 a bottle.

I heard that AUTOZONE now carries Mobil1 0W-40; call them first. If not, I purchased mine at REIT Lubricants 1-800-227-1808.
It was $26 a case plus $9.64 S&H & $3.12 tax. That came to $5.40 a qt. Again, try Autozone first.
Good luck!

changed my oil this weekend

Hey Sergio,

Thanks for the suggestion about Autozone. I read this thread a little late but I found that out while driving to Kragen, Pep Boys, & Autozone on Sunday. Got my oil from Autozone ($5.50 qt after tax) and changed it on Sunday and I don't know if it's pyschological or not, but the ride just feels a heck of a lot smoother. I had Penzoil 0W-40 synthetic 9K miles ago which I purchased from the dealer at $8 qt.

I changed OEM air filter while I was at it too so a combination of oil & air makes my C280 a happy camper. [:)]

Thanks again,

I buy most of my parts online at signifficant discount prices (same parts without the "star").
Mobil1 is a great choice. Keep changing it every 10K and you'll be fine.

Hey Sergio,

Yah, I stock piled on the oil filters the last time I was at the MB dealer w/ a mechanic friend of mine since he had a wholesale license. But after comparing prices w/ www.bimmerzone.com & www.thebenzbin.com, online is still a little cheaper. I got another 5 oil filters to go before I need to purchase online. [:)] And next time I get the air filter, I saw some quality ones (Remax & K&N) on eBay for bout $20-$25 shipped. Not bad.

Thanks again,

I bought a case at Costco last year and it was the cheapest around. But I don're recall what the price was. I think they still stock it, though.

I would change it every 10,000 miles (with the filter).
