So I'm sure most will laugh and call me a fool! But I was running late for work and go to my car and it's dead. So I have a buddy come give me a jump and I'm rushing so I accidentally hooked jumper cables up backwards!! So I finally realize and fix them and car starts up just fine. But abs light came on and hasn't gone back off.. Checked fuze front and back all fine. I don't have cash to have Mercedes dealership to run codes n my local shop doesn't have my vehicle in their system.. So I'm stuck and need to pass inspection! I read something about alternator being cause in some cases.. I'm sure I burnt something up just not sure where to start. Any advice!!!?? Or suggestions? Thanks for your time!!
well usually the easiest way to get rid of a code is to read what the code is, and then replace what is broken as is indicated by the code (It would suck if your light came back on while you were on the way to the inspection...)
I haven't got around to trying the battery yet. But I definitely tried just taking the bulb out because I have two instrument panels so I took bulb out of bad one and swapped and I thought I was good but when he checked the lights he noticed and double checked to see if car had the abs pump so busted me lol so has to be fixed. I have a list lol but my main concern is the light and my differential is leaking from where the half shaft bolts on I'm pretty sure it's just a seal but any advice on that would be nice and thanks for suggestions didn't think would get so many
Anyway, reversing the polarity on anything is a bad idea! I can't tell you what the extend of the damage, were any codes pulled up for the ABS? If not I suggest you have your car scanned to check what's what.
Like I said my local shop well the one that's speaks English lol doesn't have this model or something so can't run codes and dealership wants 40 an hour and you know they will milk it plus 19% tax because it's Germany. I'll be in states in 8 months lol n won't have to worry about it But need my car till then guess will just have to suck it up And fork out the money.
Try going to an independent shop and having it scanned. It might save you a little money. You might try a collision shop. I know at our shop we don't generally charge for doing a scan, but the mechanic shops always charge.
Here in my place, the only shops that have the scanner are all mechanics, which charges exorbitanly, that is why I am contemplating on saving and buying one for myself if the price is reasonable
The price will never be reasonable, even the 300$ hand-held devices won't read the ABS codes from a mercedes. The most cost-effective option is to find a place that will scan it for you for free with professional equipment.
Be careful buying those tools on ebay. Some of the cheaper ones like Patman said, cannot read through the Mercedes specific port under the hood; they can only read through the OBD port, which is pretty limited on info. The listings for the OEM Star diagnostics that are dirt cheap, are dirt cheap because they are probably counterfeit. Unless you buy a used one taken out of service from a service center and get a deal on it, or pay a crap ton of money for one, you are better off paying the money to get it scanned somewhere. If the price seems too good to be true, make sure you investigate before you bid on one.
In my opinion, if it's too good to be true, that's because it is.
