Parking Brake Pedal Spring Broken

Hi guys, is anyone able to help me out here ? I have spent the afternoon repairing my ABS ( W202 1995 C180 Manual ) motor. ABS light came on and I went through the forum and learned how to take it off. Found the + & - leads had no more insulation. They were positively green with a few frayed bits hanging down. I'm no good at soldering so I left about 8mm of the cable on the unit and crimped some new leads with heat shrink, cleaned it all up and installed it. That appears to be working as I did a quick stop and the pedal vibrated pretty quickly. After 3 or 4 crash stops the ABS light stays on until the car is restarted, is this correct ? STRAIGHT after that I put my foot on the parking brake ... it just floated ... no ratchet effect. Checked the assembly under the rear seat and everything moves accordingly as I press the park brake. The big spring there is still operational. Now I'm under the dash with a torch ( sleep time here ! ) I noticed a small spring with a diameter of around 6mm and not too long ... about 15 or 20 mm. The lower hook is broken off. I tried to figure out how that lot works, but no luck. Can't see exactly what's behind everything. Common sense tells me that the spring must pull something down in order to engage the ratchet on the pedal. I'm 25kms from town with no real help here and I'll have to get it going myself. Photos or diagrams or hand holding at this stage would be awesome. Bernard.

I Have done this repair on a W210 recently..

Its exactly the same mechanism across W124, W202, W126, W210, etc, etc..

Very simple to repair, the only parts you need is the spring. so you have two options:

1. Go stealership and see if they sell them separately. (preferred)

2. Fabricate your own spring, from a door lock mechanism as a donor. (Or any other heavy duty spring.) Refer to picture 3


Study the pics below, and Im sure they should be of great help. I was lucky to have an entire brake mechanism in my parts collection, so I could study how it works and figure out where the spring goes. These are the pics of that mechanism..

Now you have the knowledge, its a dead-easy fix. And it lasts.

ps. just bend the tips of the spring so it never "pops" out of the holes.

I have repaired the handbrake mechanism on the W210 over 2 weeks ago, and its working perfectly every time!

Hi Mafia, you're a lifesaver. Those pictures match my set to the "T". My broken spring was hanging from the lower part and I was looking for something below THAT for it to hook onto. From your picture it obviously hooks onto the part above. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to pick up a brake reservoir cap ( making my own brake fluid bleeder with a garden sparyer ) and I'll try pick up an OEM spring or else find an alternative as you suggest. Will post back the results. Thanks again, I owe you. I'll be able to sleep a lot better tonight :)

Success !! Agents phoned to say they're going to be late with the springs ( ordered 3 ) I did the neighbourly thing and walked up and down the road and managed to find a 95% match. Gee, did I battle to try and get the spring hooked over the parts. In the end I took the circlip off the pawl and removed it. Then it was easier to hook it into the top part, then hook it into the loose pawl and then slip the pawl back onto the pivot and replace the circlip. Works like a charm but will replace it with an OEM part when it arrives.
Was feeling pretty chuffed until I noticed the ball joints on both steering knuckles were torn. Must have been like that for a while judging by the amount of crud. It just doesn't seem to end. More reading for me. Thanks again for putting me on the right track.:thumbsup:
