Instrument Cluster issue W202 1997 C230

Hello, I'm new to the forum. My g/f's C230 had the charge light come on. The car went into a low idle and the tach, speedo, ambient temp, fuel, temp, and oil gauge went to maximum. Ambient temp reads 137F.

I replaced the battery(> 7 years old) and the alternator. Battery charge light is gone.

My mechanic(I own a w210) told me to bring it in and he would reset the computer. This did not work. the car has many miles, so I decided to troubleshoot myself to save her money.

I have read that bad alternators can mess up the cluster b/c of failed capacitors.

I have also found a site, which informs me that the signals for the tach, speedo, temp, and oil come from the N3/7, N3/10, N3/11, and N3/12 engine control modules.

Where are these located? Is there fuse or relay protection? I have checked fuses and all appear to be fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nice find! Someone has posted the CD that MB sells to consumers for $120. The best sub section is the disassembly section. There are some great videos there. Make sure to look for red links in the upper right corner of each page that will take you to more detailed information on a topic and where many of the videos are buried.

Have you checked out the K40 k-40 relay? If not, do a search in this forum for posts on this. Some of the relays are underneath the fuses in the front fuse box.

I will check K40 on the forum and check functionality on the car. Any hint as for location? I'm trying to get a repair manual or schematics.

Picture of the Cluster Issue for more information

Attached is a picture of the instrument cluster "issue". This occurred when the battery charge light came on. The car went into idle even with gas pedal depressed.

After battery and alternator replacement, the battery charge light went away. Fuses were checked, but nothing was found. The mechanic tried to reset the computer, but found nothing.

The car runs fine. Everything works, but what is seen in the picture.

Couple of questions:
1. Where is relay K40?
2. Where are N3/7, N3/10, N3/11?
3. Is a relay or fuse associated with N3/7, N3/10, N3/11?
4. I have heard people have used the AC unit for diagnostics, any information or instructions?
5. If I were to pick up a used working cluster, would it need to be reprogrammed?
6. Does anyone have the wiring schematic for the cluster to the ecm?

Okay back and need more help

I have narrowed it down to the cluster. Does anyone know what year clusters will work for a 1997? It seems ebay has all, but 1997.

Had my gauge cluster repaired by these guys. Fast turn around and good customer service. Happy with the results.
BBA reman. ABS, ecu's, throttle bodies, air mass meters, and catalytic converters
Cost was $225

Fixed

Thank you for your help. I pulled a 1997 cluster from a Mercedes wrecking yard and it worked without issue. It did have a different part number, but it was still compatible. The mileage counter is off. Our car had 194K and the wrecking yard car had 86K. We will keep the car till it dies, so it isn't too big of a deal. Paid $150 for the cluster.... I hear to correct the odometer it is another $150. I will live without the correct mileage...

Instrument cluster dials dead

I see that one of you sent it to BBA Reman to get repaired. Will the car still function if I take out the cluster and send it in to get repaired or will I be without a car until I get it back?
