HOW TO: Headliner repair
Just finished redoing my headliner and interior. Thought I would write an instruction guide.
After you take all the hardware off, including the visors (the tabs that the visors click into are attached to the headliner, you will take them off AFTER you get it out) , the "oh shit" handles, the light cluster, the rear view mirror (pull hard) and the cloth gasket around the doors, which makes it easier.
You will also need to take your sunroof HARDWARE apart (DON"T TAKE IT OUT) to get to the release tabs for the roof support. You will need to take out L&R sides, which has 4 screws and the front, which just pops off. To get the sliding door out: with your sunroof partially opened pop of the plastic cover on the front and slide it out. On either side are the wind deflectors: with a small flat blade pry the clip off the front and pull out then it will come completely off. Open you sunroof all the way and the door should come out with ease.
OKAY, now for the fun part. The blank-e-de-blank headliner. First un-velcro the back (right above the headrest).
Start with the front and pry off the headliner support attached to the front of the sunroof. next pop out the tabs on the sides and once that's completed pry/pull out the back side of the sunroof from the clip. ( There is a metal support surrounding the opening of the sunroof, the front and back are hardest to take out) Next up there are 2 clips half way b/t the back and the sunroof, you should be able to just pull the whole headliner off now, Pay attention to the rear light if you didn't take it off yet. NOTE: the rear columns will prove irritating, make sure you pull them away from the frame, there are 2 clips that just pull off. If you want you can take out the columns by taking the backrest of the seat out and pulling them out.
Now go pour yourself a stiff drink cause you'll need it after this. Take out your rear seat bottom, there's 2 tabs on either side of the seat you push in to pop it up and out, then lay both of the seats all the way down. Move the headliner to the front and turn in at an angle (the goal is to bring it out the back door, (seeings how it was put in through the front or rear window at the factory) . The only way I could get it out was to fold it in half, which is a problem if your support at the sunroof is still in good shape. You might have to VERY CAREFULLY cut the support off.
Picking a work area that can get messy, carefully peal off the old material and scrape off the old glue, it should look like a rough form of fiberglass when your done. I used 3M #74 Foam Spray and fake suede (100% polyester) to replace it. If your doing the whole car like I did the use a stretchy material so as to not have seams on the rear post and deck. Make sure you wrap the edges around to the other side for added strength. When you get to the sunroof opening make sure you leave extra material for the front and back if you had to take off the metal support (put it back on after you get the headliner back in the car. I used gorilla glue) Putting it back up should be very cut and dry, just the exact opposite of taking it down.
Hope this helps.
