Oil For 97 C280?

I went to the dealership today and they recommended Mobil 1 Delvac 15w40 1300 Super. I'm hesitant because I noticed on the box that it says it's for DIESEL ENGINES and it has a picture of a semi truck on the bottles, lol.. Will this be ok with my car? Thanks.

well, just because it says its for diesels, doesnt mean its only for diesels. also, it probably wouldnt hurt your car to put in that oil, but based on where you live, i would recommend mobil 1 0w-40. that will give you the best protection on cold starts in the winter, and will provide great protection in the warm summers as well. the mobil 1 0w-40 says "european car formula" on it haha. does that make you less hesitant to try it out

Hey, MC. Nice town, Columbus, I have some good friends that live there.

You can use any of the approved oils on this list that are at least spec 229.3 and it does not have to be synthetic: Mercedes-Benz Engine Oil Recommendations

If you have not been running synthetic I would not suggest converting to it, there are anecdotal reports of leaks developing after switching an older high-miles engine to synthetic.

For quite a while MB dealers were recommending Mobil1 5W40 229.51 spec oil for gasoline engines and my understanding is that they no longer do that. I'm not a fan of changing oil brands and specs, so I'd just stay with whatever you have been using, so long as it is a spec oil. FWIW, all spec oils bear the spec on their label, so that is an easy check. Most auto parts stores carry one or more spec oils.

Hope that helps.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

i could be wrong on this, but i thought that 1997 was when they switched to recommending synthetic oil, or was in 1999?

It was sometime in 1998, when the V engine was introduced.

Copied from the MB Newsletter:

Any of the synthetic oils listed below can be
used in a MY 1998 or newer Mercedes-Benz
vehicle with a gasoline engine:
• 76 Pure Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40
• Agip Eurosport 5W-40
• Agip Synthetic PC 5W-40
• Castrol Syntec 5W-40
• Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic Oil 5W-40
• Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic Formula 0W-40
• Pennzoil Synthetic European Formula 5W-40
• Quaker State Full Synthetic European
Formula 5W-40
• Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30
• Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40
• Valvoline SynPower MXL 0W-30

Synthetic engine oil was covered in detail in
the last issue of Star Tuned, so we will only
touch on it briefly in this article. For vehicles
with the Flexible Service System (FSS), only
synthetic oil should be used in all V-6, V-8 and
V-12 gasoline engines. Conventional mineralbased
oils do not meet the performance
requirements for an FSS engine's extended
drain intervals.

For Mercedes-Benz vehicles prior to MY 1998,
petroleum-based oils may be used. Synthetics
can also be used in the older vehicles if the
engine is mechanically sound and there are no
oil leaks. Any leak must be fixed before changing
from petroleum-based oil to a synthetic
because the more “slippery” synthetic will
make the leak much worse.

I do not see anywhere where Mobil Delvac Diesel is Approved.
Take it for what it's worth. But if it's an Official MB Stealership,
I would be taken aback if they were using Non Approved Parts,
Fluids, etc.
If I was in your same shoes, I would say NO and tell the Stealership Manager
I don't approve of those sly tactics. But that's just me.
If I am paying top dollar, I want top dollar advice and repairs.

If I am doing this at home ( which I do ) It's up to me.
My call, all the time.
For my money, Approved High Quality Synthetic Oils ONLY.
