The recommendation can vary with the year of the Class. The older cars were dino oil types and then by 99 they said to go to synthetic only. Some early 99 cars either came with dino oil or received dino oil at dealer servicing. I know we got a notice that asked us to come in for them to change the oil right away and then go with synthetic after that.
Multi-weight oils (such as 10W-30) are a new invention made possible by adding polymers to oil. The polymers allow the oil to have different weights at different temperatures. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, while the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperature. This page from the Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ offers the following very interesting description of how the polymers work:
At cold temperatures, the polymers are coiled up and allow the oil to flow as their low numbers indicate. As the oil warms up, the polymers begin to unwind into long chains that prevent the oil from thinning as much as it normally would. The result is that at 100 degrees C, the oil has thinned only as much as the higher viscosity number indicates. Another way of looking at multi-vis oils is to think of a 20W-50 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 50 weight would when hot.
I read a different mercedez forum stating that there are 2 different kind of mobil one syn 5w 40 and that the turbodiesel advertised one has additives for diesels only.
Now on the LOTUS site, allot of them run the turbodiesel 5 w 40 cause that's the oil their gasoline cars run on.
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 is recommended for use in all super high performance diesel applications, including modern low emission engine designs with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). These applications include the following:
* On-highway engines operating in both high speed/high load and stop-and-go conditions
* Off-highway engines operating in severe low speed/heavy load conditions
* Virtually all diesel powered equipment from American, European, and Japanese equipment builders
* High performance gasoline engines and mixed fleets
* Refrigeration units
I also looked around to see if there were any other 5w-40's and i didnt see any in the synthetic oils.
its the only one ive seen on the mobil 1 website. maybe they used to make it in a different bottle that didnt say turbo diesel on it haha.
