1995 c280 Oil leak help

Hey there. I recently replaced the water pump in my c280 and noticed a pretty bad oil leak coming from the upper part of the left side(looking at the engine). I took it to a MB mechanic who told me it was not my head but my distributor housing seal. Has anyone been faced with this problem? If not, any links on pulling out the distributor would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Anthony

Do you mean the Cam mag?

Take a pic of the area if you can and post along with filling out your mileage profile and such. See pic, these cam mags are known to leak down the front of engine, mine did a while back, its a replace only item, they will leak internally and wick oil through the plug. B

I am checking this area too. It is so accessible. So, per your suggestion B, I checked the Cam Mag today and noticed a lot of grime around the plug and on the underside of the magnet. However, I did not notice any wet. Was yours/should the leaking very noticeable?

mine had grime on it too, i was attempting to clean my engine up so i can notice if any leaks are present... mine may leak slowly, is it bad if it leaks?

Is there oil on the ground? Is the bottom of the engine coated with oil. If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes mine is. I don't mean to threadjack but I would like to know how much oil to expect from the camshaft adjuster/magnet if it is faulty. Like, "wow, this shit is f'd up" or "I have a lot of black residue, but no wet oil". Thanks.

Common problem on the 280 inline 6.
It leaks under the head, a bit further back than where the mag is.
I'm not sure exactly what they changed on mine but it wasn't expensive.
It's not the head gasket though.

i have a 220 and its not leaking at the head gasket, its defenitely around the cam mag. i dont really see oil, just black residue like metafly down the front of my engine, im guessing at some point it was oil, now its oil dirt lol. there is no oil on the bottom, im in the process of cleaning it up so i can see if it returns.. maybe it was just a previous problem that was never cleaned up.

Do you remember where exactly? Thanks. Michael
