i was thinking about buying a 1998 c280 sport but I don't think its fast enough for me. i cant afford a C36 or C43.
what performance products are out there and what will give me the most bang for my buck?

There isn't much available in the way of bolt-on performance mods, and what I have seen is terribly expensive considering the hp returns. The affordable stuff will give you 10-15 hp (exhaust, underdrive pulleys, etc) and they aren't necessarily designed to work with each other, so if you get pulleys that claim 10hp and a cat-back exhaust that claims to give you 10hp they don't automatically add up to 20hp.
Honestly, your least expensive solution will be a used C36 or C43, which will be cheaper than buying a C280 and then modifying it. Alternatively, you could look for a C280 with a blown engine and then transplant a used AMG engine (plus computer) into it, but that ain't gonna be cheap and you also wont get the suspension and brake mods that AMG includes to handle the extra power.
I would agree, there's not much available as merc's were never intended to be tuner cars. What you will find will cost quite a bit. Don't count on cold air intakes and chips off ebay to do anything to help you
Go with a kompressor if you want to go with a newer model. Im pretty satisfied with mine, ive never gone up against a 280 but ive been told theyre quicker, maybe just marginally tho.
don't put any performance parts, you wanna keep your motor running longer with no problems then just stick to factory , mind you this is not a honda its not meant to be *tuned* even tuned honda motors have a much shorter lifespan after being tuned, i say this from experience as a integra ex-owner, as for tuning a benz parts that can break are much more expensive than a honda, ex. a benz tranny will run u close to 3 grand, a honda tranny will run you 50-300 anywhere , so stick to factory or u just might be one of those that regrets it, good luck
thats a pretty naive narrow minded statement. If someone wants to improve the performance of their car, it is up to them. Further more that isn't true at all, if you know where to look you can mod for almost the same budget and also stock markets are prone to failure and lot of times aftermarket components will save time, money and even INCREASE longevity in the long run.

are you really trying to say that aftermarket performance parts are gonna increase the lifespan of an engine , my friend, please don't let anyone smart read what you are trying to say, any motor will run longer at the rated power output for that specific motor, mercedes can get more power out of a 2.3k but of course they didnt because it would sacrifice the reliabilty of a motor, you seriously need some counseling if you think performance parts will increase the lifespan of a motor and/or its components good luck to you also
I have to agree with omey, you are incorrect. There are lots of OEM parts that are weak and fail over time, by upgrading them you improve the longevity of the engine easily. I understand you are one of those "I LOVE STOCK" kind of people but don't spread you naive thoughts around to others, its just not true. Further more true longevity has more to do with proper maintenance than anything else. A modded engine properly maintained could have double the life span of a stock engine that wasn't cared for.
