C-class vs 190

I've been looking to get a comfortable cheap commuter car & daily driver. Currently, I'm using a Porsche Boxster S as my daily driver and I need something more practical. I was looking at getting a Mercedes 190 or 190D since many of those can be found for under $3K but I really like the newer interiors and better ergonomics of the first gen C220. What is the opinion of everyone here as to how the 2 models compare against each other?

My main concern is maintenance because I know those 190's can be very reliable. I used to own an Audi A4 that cost me a bundle in maintenance from leaky coolant, transmission, and blow cylinder heads. How does the C220 hold up when it comes to the more expensive maintenance items?

The C220 might very well be the last truly good automobile that MB made. The 4 cylinder engine when combined with the 4 speed automatic are pretty much indestructible if the cars are serviced as recommended. The 6 cylinder versions (especially the first few years) had a lot of expensive engine-related issues.

Now, having said that, you are contemplating buying a 12-14 year old car here, so expect stuff to have to be replaced as a matter of course. Things like radiators, water pumps, and alternators only last so long. You can also expect shocks, if they haven't been done already. One area that all the W202 cars are known for are wearing out the lower control arm bushings. This can be a pricey job ($7-900 including parts, labour and alignment) so I'd want to cover those in any pre-purchase inspection.

As far as the W201 to W202 comparo, I don't think there's a real comparison. I think the W202 feels more like an MB than the W201 does. I think it would be worth the difference in price.

201s dont have the saftey and the mpg as a 202...just another aspect

I had a 190E before I got my C220 and there's no comparison. The only
thing that's better with the 190E is that it has a power front passenger
seat which the C220 doesn't have.

My 1996 C220 has Power Seats for both Drive and Passenger. I also like the power folding rear head rest.

get a 190E diesel........specially if u live in the states......where the gallon of gas is 4,60 premium......

as for looks, I like both. but being biased I would say go for the 202.

If you are considering a 190D, you have to be very patient. Its quite a slow car especially if your daily driver is a Porsche. There was a turbodiesel (2.5) that was sold only 1 year during the W201 span, I think it was 1987.

Perhaps a more suitable daily driver would be a 1999-2000 C230 Kompressor. I currently drive a '99 C230K and its been quite reliable so far. The C220's are very reliable but you may want to test drive one first to see if its peppy enough for you. The C230 Kompressors are a good balance between sportiness, reliability, and economy IMHO.

i got a c180 slow and fat but i love it over my old 190..can u guys get a c220CDI in the states??

the 190s are not that bad, You can get the 2.6 engine which will give you almost the same mpg for the 2.3 and still pretty fast.
I would prefer the 190 over the C class as the C is known for it is wiring harness problems.
