My check engine light went on the other day right after a car wash(did not wash engine bay), so im not sure if those two are related, probably not. But i wasnt bagging it, just a casual drive. So i parked it at home. the levels are fine, and smooth gear changes, no unusual noises, gas cap closed lol. So im bringing it into MB this week, hopefully monday, as their service dept. isnt open weekends. Anyone have any advice as to whether or not it will be okay in limited driving or should i just keep it parked? Anyone have an idea on what the dealership charges for a diagnostic?
Why don't you go one of the major auto parts stores and borrow one of their free code scanners? MB dealers can charge high prices for diagnostics in some areas.
Id be curious to find out if any parts stores around here would have something like that for me to borrow, doesnt seem to be many DIY MB ppl here in toon town, but if i were to find one, i wouldnt even know how to use it, im assuming theres some sorta "port" to plug in to?
I bought a reader at Wal-Mart for less than a C note for the good one, buy the GOOD one. They carry two models down here in So. Cal. If you plan on DIY it's a worthwhile investment. I can tell you that you will be a hero amongst your friends that get a CEL light as well
It will also help people on this site help you fix your car if they know your codes.
How to use one: It plugs in under the dash below the steering wheel. (Some cars are in the center console) There is a black cover that swings down and a polarized D plug. You plug the Reader in and turn the key to the ON position, scroll through and choose the brand of car. Follow the screen instructions and in about a minute it will show your codes by number and description. If you have any trouble figuring them out come right back here and someone will help you. This site is terrific that way!
Good Luck

Reason: adding info
.....but if its a stupid emissions problem lie the 2nd air pump, then phuck it because nobody cares about the environment pollution as long as your engine is functioning properly, nobody cares about the catalytic converters either, once the crap air leaves the engine it aint important anymore
I dont think thats too true and you shouldnt really be looking at it like that any how.
