I am a new member to Benzworld. I recently purchased a '99 C230 K with 90K miles.
There are a couple of issues primarily related to a cold start, that I have noticed with the car:
- In normal city driving, under low speeds, the car runs a little hot- around 90 - 95 degrees, but it drops down to 80 on the highway.
- There is a loud whining noise coming form the front of the engine, its especially loud in the mornings.
- In the mornings, the transmission refuses to shift from 2- 3rd for the first 1/4 mile. This issue does not occur if i start the car and let it idle for 5 minutes.
- The car shudders on acceleration in the mornings. It has plenty of power and drives very smooth, but there is some sort of vibration when I accelerate. It eventually goes away after a mile or so of driving.
- Yesterday, while driving on the freeway, I tried to accelerate hard to pass a semi, and the car did not respond. The engine started to vibrate and the check engine light came on. I took the first exit and noticed that the car has started to idle very rough. I turned it off and turned and then back on. THis seemed to fix the problem, but the check engine light stayed on. I took it to an Advance Auto parts store today to get a code read and they found a "P0302 - Cylinder 2 misfired" code. They deleted the code, and the check engine light now stays off. Should i be worried?
Other than these issues, the car is great. I love it.
#1 - have you checked to make sure both fans are running and operating correctly?
#2 - description is not complete enough to give good advice. If you really meant more of a roaring sound, then it is the normal warmup cycle where it uses the SC instead of an airpump to lower startup emissions.
#3 - normal. Transmission delays upshifts until engine warms up to speed warmup
#4 & 5 - could be a number of things. I would test the spark plug, coil and wire to that cylinder first.

Thanks for the reply!
#1 - Both the electrical (aux) fans work fine.
#2 - The whinnying is more like the sound a power steering pump makes when there is low fluid. I had taken it to a mechanic earlier who thought it was the fan clutch slipping, and thus making the noise. If that's possible could it explain the higher engine temperature in traffic and lower speeds?
#4 - The check engine light has not re-appeared. I've been driving the car around town. How can I test the spark plug, coil and wire?
