Question Rebuild my trans. or swap an already rebuilt trans. Poll

My C220 slips a little in reverse when the gas is pressed. Drive fine otherwise. My mechanic that I am growing to trust after he did a great job on the not starting problem suggested a very open ended solution.

He said I should drop the tranny, open it up and see if I should rebuild it or buy an already rebuilt unit. If there is too much to rebuild, an already rebuilt one is availible for $1250 parts and who knows amount of labor.

I don't really like the idea or not knowing the number of hours or the price of parts to rebuild the one I have.

What are your opinions? Rebuild mine or put a rebuilt one in?

Thank you for your time replying. I am curious what has happened for you guys and gals that have chosen those two different paths.

I'd like to take a poll of the two options from the Benzworld community with the long term results of your decision to choose one way or the other.

Thanks, this Poll will help me and others on a tuff decision, thanks for your vote.

if you would have warrenty with the rebuilt one then i would say go for it, also make sure you get it from a good place not from a junk yard.

How many miles does the car have? The tranny might need minor repair but if major, I would buy a rebuilt tranny. There's a place in CA (Sun Valley, I think) that has a very good reputation and they warrant their trannys.

I'd definitely go with the rebuilt unit if there was a warranty. I'd figure you should expect a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty on something like that. As you pointed out, you also will know your exact costs up front, and if you drop your car off first thing in the morning you should be able to pick it up at the end of the day. It could be at the shop for days if you opt to go with the "let's open it up and see what we get" approach. Finally, you get a transmission that was rebuilt by experts whose business is rebuilding transmissions. I think you've got a better chance of a successful outcome with them, as opposed to a guy who knows how to rebuild them but doesn't do it every day. This is the exact same approach that MB follows on a warranty transmission. They don't have their techs rebuild them at the dealer. They have a transmission rebuild centre. The tech at the dealer does the re/re on your tranmisssion with a new or rebuilt unit, and then sends the core to the rebuild cente.

The price varies by transmission... the newer 5 speed's are more than the previous 4 speeds... here's a link to the 4 speed for the 94 C220 the OP is referring to:

Sun Valley has a C220 trans for me for $1250 and $250 to install. $1500 total cost with a 2 year warranty.

Please elaborate on "Crap", I am not sure if you mean Sun Valley, or the 5 speed trans. Please let me know, this is a big decision and I need everyone's opinion and past experiences so I can choose the right fix.

Thanks for everyone's replys. Keep them coming, I really want to hear from people who have rebuilt there own and people who swaped.

Thanks for your time giving me your stories.
