Can you use a 1997 C280 Mercedes engine wiring harness on a 1995 C280 Mercedes.
Not unless it is the same part number. On the other hand, with modification it might be possible?

See here for part numbers:

More information about the Mercedes Wire Harness Defect can be found in http://www.MercedesDefects.com

This very dangerous defect is a result of poor engineering and negligence on the part of Mercedes-Benz. There is no telling what new defects are latent in the new cars. By the way they have tried to weasel out of their responsibilities on millions of defective vehicles, you can count on them continuing doing so in the future.

Everyone should file complaints with the NHTSA (see the site above, it has a link to the NHTSA) but no one expects them to do much as they are politically controlled.

Hi doin12volts,

My repaired harness arrived a few days ago, many thanks!

It looks far better than new and certainly more robust to withstand the engine bay temperatures. A very professional job indeed. Now I just need a spare few hours to install it...can't wait!

No.

The 1996+ C280 used ME electronics, the 1994-1995 C280 used HFM.

Hi from a sunny South Africa! I am new on the forum and also the proud owner of a 1994 C220 Mercedes Benz automatic. We experience exactly the same problems with our C class Mercedes Benz's, wiring, wiring, wiring!! The models that was launched in SA differ a little bit but the bulk is more or less the same. To replace a harness cost about R12000.00 or more or less $1538.00 here in SA. I also eventually had to fix the wiring myself and it was not to difficult. My question as the rest of you is: Why did Mercedes "diliberately" install a part, which is to my opinion a life and limb part, of inferior quality and then expect customers to pay through their ears to replace this part? I know of one or two cases where people ended up in accidents - costing them their lives - because of this. My problems is still not sorted out as the auxilary fans tend to come on from time to time below operating temperatures and there is still a slight "misfire" at times - sounds like she sometimes run on three pistons but if I depress the accelerator the problem stops temporarily. So if you guys have any suggestions in this matter it would be appreciated.

Post Wiring Harness Defect

Albert,

The wiring Harness issue (from what I have read) was a mandate by the German Govt. to use biodegratable wiring harnesses and other parts too. The insulation was not tested for long enough a period before the German auto makers were forced to use it. By the time the rapid degradation was discovered, the damage was done. I understand M/B was not the only car line affected. I think I will try and do some deeper research and see if I can find the truth. If I suddenly dissapear you know they got me!

Good Luck and Welcome to the Forum!

C as in 220

Thanks cjshade,
In the meantime I will send the South African version of James Bond or Magnum PI to come and look for you. I am going to take my vehicle to some one who's got one of those diagnostic machines to try and find out what the causes of my other problems are. If I know then it would be easier to do the repairs myself. Maybe it is just a simple problem like a defective fan switch or solenoid, you'll never know. It is really a pitty that such a "small" thing can cause so much trouble. After all it is really a great car to drive!

Regards
Albert
